Malmo is the third most highly populated city in Sweden. It is on the shores of Scania. It is one of the lesser visited cities in Sweden and for that reason is a great, tourist free location filled with lots of quaint offerings and stunning old architecture. It is not a particularly cheap city, as none in Sweden are but it makes up for this by being a highly cultured and high quality place to visit.

Flights

You can fly to the Malmo from a number of international airports in the UK including Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh and Heathrow. You can fly with SAS Flights and Sterling Flights. Prices are moderate and because it is quite a unique location that isn’t hugely popular with tourists the prices are moderate. Booking earlier will give you the best possible price. If you find it hard to locate a flight you could fly to another city that does have cheaper flights then rent a car or get a coach to the city. The peak season is from May to September and because Sweden tends to be quite an expensive place to visit, it is worth booking your hotel in advance. You can enter the country with a valid UK passport with no restrictions. The local airport is Malmo Airport.

Climate

Malmo has a moderate temperature that isn’t extremely hot or extremely cold; known as a maritime climate. Because it has a high altitude there are many hours of daylight in the summer but only 8 in the winter. In the summer the weather reaches around 20 degrees centigrade, but can exceed 25 degrees centigrade. In the winter, it can also be temperate and warmer than other parts of the city. Summer is the most popular time for visits, although there are tourists throughout the year, especially at Christmas since the city is charming during this period.

What to do

Malmo has a lot of stunning old architecture. Much of it was built in the 1300s – 1600s during the periods of expansion and you can see these buildings today. Mixed with this is a strong cosmopolitan feel, and you will see modern urban builds mixed up with the old, antique buildings.

There is the Malmohus Castle which has the Malmo Museum, a good place to learn more about the interesting history of the city. There is the Rooseum Centre for Contemporary Art which has a collection of interesting pieces, although it was closed on a temporary hiatus in 2006.

The city also has lots of cultural art, theatre and music; big artists such as Morrissey, Nick Cake and the Rolling Stones have played in the city.

There is also a beach on the west harbour which stretches over Malmo’s coastline. Although it is colder in Sweden than in other sunnier locations in Europe, many people do still enjoy the beach, know as the Riversborg. Some people have a hot sauna first then dive into the chilly water for an invigorating experience. On the coastline there are also lots of places to eat and relax.
