Stockholm is the capital of Sweden; a quaint and beautiful city full of discoveries for the discerning tourist. Although modern, Stockholm is also one of the oldest surviving medieval cities. It’s made up of two islands, Gamla Stan and Riddarholmen. It is one of the more expensive cities in Europe, but everything is of a high standard; the food, the hotels, the commerce. Many UK tourists have not yet experienced the unique quality of Sweden and Stockholm, and what it has to offer, making it an ideal place to visit.

Flights

You can fly to Stockholm from a number of international airports in the UK including Gatwick, Manchester and Heathrow. You can fly with Ryanair, Lufthansa, Air France, Air Baltic, British Airways and KLM. The peak season is from May to September since the weather is warmer. There are also more festivals in the city during the summer, but this also means that flights cost more and so do hotels. Most hotels require booking so it’s better to plan ahead. In the winter, or off season, you get fewer hours of daylight and it can be cold. If you love the winter and snow, then you may enjoy this but for this reason, hotels costs less. You can enter the country with a valid UK passport with no restrictions. The local airport is Stockholm Arlanda International Airport.

Climate

The climate in Stockholm is moderate and not as chilly as you would expect. In the summer, the weather is warm and is usually in the mid 20s. In the winter, the temperature is cool and can reach -10 degrees centigrade. During the summer, and midsummer, Stockholm has many hours of daylight, almost the entire day, meaning that you can make your time last longer. There is snow in January to March; also making it a unique time to visit for a festive feel, and June and July are the wettest

What to do

Stockholm is full of quaint and interesting sights to see. There are plenty of museums too for people who love to see new things; the Skansen is the oldest ethnographical museum in the world. At the Vasa Museum, the most visited museum in Stockholm, there are many treasures, including the Vasa, the only preserved 17th century ship in the world. If you visit the island of Skeppsholmen, you will find the Modern Art Museum that has some of the most famous works in the world, including paintings from Picasso and Matisse.

Stockholm has two major parks, Angso and Tyresta. Tyresta is an hour away from the city and Angso is a short boat right away – you can book tickets for this at the local tourist office.

There is also a traditional food hall called the Ostermalms Saluhall, which dates back from 1888. Here you can get traditional Swedish food and sweets, as well as some souvenirs to take back home.

There is also the old town, which dates back to the 13th century and is full of narrow houses and streets. Take a stroll down here to see some of the unique buildings and the St George statue.

And who are Sweden’s most famous import? Abba! There is a music museum which has a dedicated exhibition to the band.
