Geneva is a city in Switzerland, and the second most popular after Zurich. Geneva is seen as a refined city, one of fine art, food and people and has a very high standard of living. The city is not the cheapest but flights and accommodation are reasonable. Geneva is popular with UK tourists that fancy a holiday in a luxurious and beautiful city. Geneva is seen as a local city because it houses a number of international organisations like the Red Cross and the United Nations. This is also the place where the Geneva Convention was signed (hence the name), to protect prisoners of war and to prosecute war criminals years after the event has taken place.

Flights

Geneva is a very popular location so you can fly from the UK from most of the international airports such as Manchester, Birmingham, Heathrow and Gatwick. You can fly with a large range or airlines, such as Jet2, Easyjet, Air France, KLM, and Lufthansa, Switzerland flights, Skynet Flights, Flybe Flights and Thomsonfly. Usually booking in advance is advised but there are so many airlines offering this service so you can afford to book later on. You can enter Switzerland with no trouble with a valid UK passport even though it is not part of the EU.

Climate

Geneva has a moderate climate. In the winter, it can be cold and frosty, and the lakes can become solid. In the summer, the weather is pleasant. The warmest months are July and August where the weather is usually in the mid 20s, with a little rainfall. Summer is the most popular time to visit so expect flights to be snapped up quickly during these months although the destination is so popular that it shouldn’t be too hard finding a UK flight to the location. Geneva is a city that is still charming and eventful in the cold winter, so feel free to visit all year round. Christmas for example, gives the city a special charm.

What to do

Geneva is a rich city and full of culture. You can eat well and experience the highest quality entertainment and food here. You are not far from the Alps, meaning that you can also pop over to do a spot of winter sports. Geneva is a French speaking city which is helpful as most students in the UK learn some French in school!

There are some interesting features to see – the Jet d’Eau is the world’s tallest water fountain – it can propel water at 124 miles per hour and needless to say, it’s a favourite which children. However when it is windy the city is closed due to the problem with water spray.

The Cathedrale de St Pierre in the old town is a central attraction. Here you can look at the stunning architecture, the churches and cathedrals. For more art why not visit the Patek Phillipe Museum? Here is a collection of work by the likes of Van Gogh, Renoir and Monet.

There are a number of beaches nearby and if you are travelling in the summer months you may want to go for a spot of sunbathing or swimming.
