Grindelwald is every bit as special as its name. A traditional mountain town with spectacular alpine views, the city has been getting more popular with tourists in the UK and is a great place to ski and take part in winter sports. For those who aren’t as concerned with winter sports, you can also choose to relax and take part in winter activities. UK Flights to Grindelwald are fairly regular.

Flights

There are no direct flights to Grindelwald from the UK – you need to fly to the closest airport in Switzerland, which in this case is Basel before being transferred to the resort. Basel is 2 hours away, as is Zurich airport. Geneva Airport is three hours away. If you book a package holiday with certain airlines you can organise this at the time of booking. Since there are three possible locations, search the biggest airlines to find the best deal’ sometimes flying to Geneva may be a lot cheaper than going to the other two locations even though it is an extra hour away. You can fly from UK airports such as Luton, Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Jersey to Zurich. Airlines that fly there include SLK, Air France, SWISS, British Airways and Easyjet.

Climate

The sun shines for a lot of the year and temperatures are fairly moderate. The average afternoon temperature is between around 0 to -3 degrees centigrade. Since people go to Grindelwald to expect snow, you can visit all year round although it is still the most popular during the summer due to children being off school in the UK during the months of August and September – expect high prices at this time, especially for accommodation and ski passes.

What to do

As a ski resort you can take part in a number of winter activities. This includes skiing, tubing, going on the luge, snowboarding and more. Some of the popular resorts to look out for include the Belvedere Swiss Qualrit hotel, Hotel Eiger, Hotel Kreuz and Post, Hotel Lauberhorn, Minotel Bernehof, Romantik Hotel Schweierhof Gri, Silence Hotel Kirchbuehl and Sunstar Hotel Grindelwald.

Don’t forget specific Ski insurance. At the end of the day, Skiing can cause some accidents so you need to be covered for any potential medical costs in case of an accident. The insurance will also cover you for theft of your ski equipment.

Eat the traditional dish rosti with egg to keep yourself warm. Rosti is usually made from grated potato, flattened into a cake then fried in some oil until it is brown.

Take a short drive to Trummerlbach where you will see a series of waterfalls leading to cave in a mountain. You can walk around these areas but not if you are taking children as they can be slippery and dangerous. Alternatively you can go to Glacier Gorge, a 35 minute walk that shows a gorge that has been carved out of a glacier. There is a restaurant nearby.
