St. Mortiz is a resort in Switzerland, in the Alps. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious of the resorts – even though it is snowy, it also boasts 300 days of sunshine per year. For those who want to experience winter sports, St Mortiz could be the place for you; there are frequent UK flights and competitive deals to be had. The city has also hosted the winter Olympics twice – one of the few places to date that has. It has also been mentioned numerous times in the media as it is seen as a glamorous location; in the James bond film Goldfinger, and in the novel, On her Majesty’s secret service.

Flights

As St Mortiz is a resort, you need to fly to Switzerland then take a coach or taxi to the resort. The best airport to go to is Zurich. You can fly from UK airports such as Luton, Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Jersey to Zurich. Airlines that fly there include SLK, Air France, SWISS, British Airways and Easyjet. The best value generally is Easyjet although you may prefer to book a package holiday to St Moritz so that you are transferring from the airport to the resort is arranged and your accommodation. You can enter the country without much fuss with a valid UK passport.

Climate

The sun shines for the majority of the year and temperatures are fairly moderate. St Moritz has lots of snow but also boasts 322 days of sunshine a year. This means that you will need to use sun protection because the sun reflecting on the snow will cause burns. The average afternoon temperature is between around 0 to -2 degrees centigrade. Since people go to St Moritz to expect snow, you can visit all year round although it is still the most popular during the summer due to children being off school in the UK during the months of August and September – expect high prices at this time, especially for accommodation and ski passes.

What to do

Popular things to do are of course winter sports; skiing, hiking, snowboarding, for children tubing and the luge – also the Cresta Run toboggan course is nearby. You can book in or lessons easily if you are new to skiing and also take your children on a lesson. There are slopes of different levels for people of different skill sets. If you are experienced you can generally go higher up. For children and families there are shallow slopes. Don’t forget that you can rent a lot of the gear required so there’s no need to spend huge amounts of money beforehand.

The Alps are stunning to view so make sure you go for a hike. You can go to certain areas to view the glacier – descending from the Diavolezza and the Morteratsch Glacier gives spectacular views.

Due to it’s high end reputation, St Mortiz is known for its shops – Gucci, Dolce and Gabana, Escada, Ralph Lauren, Bulgari and lots of other brands all have concessions in the area.
