Flights to Antalya
Antalya Airport (airport code: AYT) is one of the busiest in Turkey, though much of their traffic is seasonal. From the UK, many tourists come on charter or low cost flights to Antalya with airlines including AtlasJet, Onur Air, Pegasus Airlines, Sky Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines, and Thomson Airways. You can also get a scheduled flight to Antalya with British Airways, Monarch or Turkish Airlines, or choose another scheduled airline and get a one stop flight to Antalya. This may possibly be a cheaper option though this isn’t always the case!
Antalya Tourist Attractions
The reason why Antalya is such a popular Turkish tourist destination is the large number of attractions here. Being in south west Turkey Antalya has great summer weather with hot and sunny days that are perfect for enjoying the beaches. But this isn’t just a sun and sand destination, as Antalya has plenty of culture and history to explore too, and some wonderful scenery to admire.
Kaleici – the Old Quarter of Antalya
Antalya is an ancient city, founded in the year 150BC and named Attalia after its founder, Attalos II. The Old Quarter, known locally as Kaleici, isn’t this old, but it does feature most of the city’s major historical landmarks. You will find it within the old city walls and it’s a great place to wander around the narrow streets nd soak in the atmosphere.
Hadrian’s Gate
There are several entrances into the old quarter but Hadrian’s Gate is the most impressive. This structure is actually almost as old as Antalya itself, built by the Romans in the year 130, and it’s been remarkably well preserved because much of it was covered over by the newer city walls. When a section of these walls collapsed this triumphal arch (well, three arches actually) was revealed.
Yivli Minare
The Fluted Minaret is the symbol of the city of Antalya and was the minaret of one of the first Islamic buildings of the city. It was built between 1230 and 1373 and is believed to have been converted from an original Byzantine church. The mosque that first accompanied the beautiful minaret was destroyed in the 14th century and the one that was built in place of it still stands today. It hasn’t served as a mosque for some years but is now the Antalya Ethnographic Museum.
Antalya Museum
As well as the Ethnographic Museum you should definitely visit Antalya Museum while staying here. It’s also known as Antalya Archaeological Museum and is one of the largest museums in the whole of Turkey. You’ll see many thousands of artefacts from all over the Mediterranean region.
Hidirlik Tower
Hidirlik Tower is situated at the point where the city walls come to meet the sea. The tower is square on the bottom but circular on the top and is thought to have been built in the Hellenistic period. There’s an attractive little park surrounding the tower and from here you can get some great views of the coast.
When Should You Visit Antalya?
Summer is the peak season in Antalya, because the weather is so hot and sunny then. The drawback is that there are many people visiting at this time of year; enjoying the average highs in the mid 30sC. Temperatures are not quite so hot in spring and autumn and there are less people, while the mild winters are very wet.
