Bodrum Tourist Attractions
Bodrum is well known as a package holiday destination, yet it shouldn’t be thought of as simply a sun and sand place. Admittedly, if you’re looking for a lively destination that has nightclubs, bars, restaurants, plenty of hotels, shopping, and of course great weather, you will find that here, but Bodrum is also a place for culture and heritage because of its ancient history.
Ancient Sites
In ancient times Bodrum was called Halicarnassus and was settled by the ancient Carians in the 7th century BC. One of the major rulers of the Carians was named Mausolus and a huge mausoleum was built in his honour when he died. The mausoleum was destroyed in an earthquake, but many of the stones that fell from the structure were used to build Bodrum’s castle. The foundations of the mausoleum do still exist today and if you’re interested they can be visited by taking a walk up the hill from the marina.
A more obvious ancient site is that of the Bodrum Amphitheatre. This is thought to have been started during the reign of Mausolus but wasn’t completed until Roman times. It is situated outside the centre of town alongside one of the major roads, but it is one of the best preserved ancient sites in the area.
Bodrum Castle
Bodrum Castle is by far the most important landmark in the town, prominently situated on the waterfront at the end of the main marina. It was built in 1402 by the Knights Hospitaller and is one of the best preserved medieval castles. Visitors can look around the castle and enjoy some great views, and make sure you visit the museum inside called the Museum of Underwater Archaeology as this is highly recommended.
Shops and Restaurants
Admittedly the shops and restaurants have become somewhat tourist oriented and you will pay a slight premium here over les touristy towns, however, Bodrum does have an excellent range of restaurants with something to suit most tastes. Fresh fish is usually excellent, though pricey, and if you enjoy meat you can’t go wrong with a mixed grill!
There are shops down every street in Bodrum. Along the marina promenade there are shops selling many different souvenirs, while if you explore some of the smaller streets inland from the marina you’ll find all sorts of items being sold.
When Should You Visit Bodrum?
Bodrum has a Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine and hot temperatures during the summer. July and August are hottest with an average high around 34C. This can be too hot for some, so you may prefer to visit in the spring or autumn. Rainfall is very minimal in the summer and starts picking up from September, peaking ion December to February. Winter temperatures are mild but this is definitely the off season.
