Places in the Comoros

Other airlines such as Air France, British Airways, BMI, Egyptair, and Lufthansa offer travellers two stop flights to Comoros from the UK. The actual flight routes with the airlines but all will have a second connection in Sanaa.
The Tourist Attractions of Comoros
Unlike its close neighbours, the Seychelles, Comoros is a very poor country that does not attract a great deal of tourists. The main reason for this is lack of infrastructure.
Comoros doesn’t have the economy to be able to build the kind of infrastructure expected by many tourists these days. So visitors expecting to find 5 star hotels, spas, fancy restaurants and more should look elsewhere – perhaps the Seychelles?! Visitors who are more interested in a cultural and natural experience are likely to find Comoros a wonderful place to visit!
Although there are officially four large islands, only three are administered by Comoros and included in this guide. The islands official Comorian names are Ngazidja, Nzwani and Mwali, though they are often known by their French names which are Grand Comore, Anjouan and Moheli respectively. As mentioned, transport between the islands is often by air with two airlines, Air Services Comores and Comores Aviation. Alternatively travel by boat.
Grand Comore
The largest of the Comoros islands is Grand Comore. The capital city and international airport is located on Grand Comore. Moroni is the most westernised of the country’s towns and cities as it has hotels, restaurants, shops and a nightclub, but this is about as Westernised as Comoros gets! One of the top sites here is the Badjanani Mosque, one of the oldest in the country. The medina near the port in Moroni is popular, with its narrow alleyways and ancient buildings.
Around the island you will also find other smaller towns. Many of these, such as Iconi, have a more authentic feel to them, especially their ‘Medina-style’ centres.
Another attraction on Grand Comore is the Karthala Volcano. This is an active volcano and potentially very dangerous, but when it’s quiet it’s a popular hiking destination.
Moheli
The smallest Comoros island is Moheli. Moheli is perfect for visitors who want to experience some of the scenic beauty that Comoros has to offer, both on land and in the waters surrounding it. Diving and snorkelling are popular on the coral reefs. Boating, fishing and whale watching are great too, or enjoy the mountains and hiking in the forests. Visiting the small villages and making friends with the local people is a perfect way to get to know the people and culture of Comoros.
Anjouan
Anjouan has its own attractions too, but because of fighting between rebel groups and African Union forces this island is currently unsafe for travel.
When Should You Visit Comoros?
There are just two seasons in Comoros – hot and wet, and cooler and dryer. November to April is the hottest and most humid time, plus with the threat of cyclones this is not a good time to visit. The rest of the year is more pleasant as it is a little cooler and dryer.
