Moroni Tourist Attractions

Although the whole of Comoros is not as well developed as nearby popular destinations like the Seychelles, Moroni is the most westernised town in Comoros and does feature a range of tourist infrastructure including hotels, restaurants and shops, and a nightclub for dancing those nights away! However, tourists looking for an alternative to the Seychelles will no doubt be sorely disappointed with Moroni as this is a relatively poor city and you should not expect the same levels of high quality here.

Moroni is a good base to use for exploring the rest of the island of Grand Comore and the Comoros, and in addition to the good beaches that are situated in the vicinity there are several other attractions that visitors might like to head for…

The Medina

Always popular with locals and visitors alike, the Medina section of the city gives you a chance to see a part of the city that hasn’t changed in hundreds of years. The alleys of the Medina are winding and criss crossing each other and are dominated by the ancient buildings that rise on either side. During the heat of the day the Medina is actually a nice place to spend some time because the buildings allow the alleys to be shaded and keep cool.

Badjanani Mosque

Next to the port and the medina is the Badjanani Mosque. This is one of the oldest mosques in the country is very popular with the locals as a place to pray. Visitors may be allowed inside the mosque outside of prayer times, but should check current policies before simply wandering in.

Volo Volo Market

The Volo Volo Market is the largest market in Moroni and indeed on Grand Comore. This is the kind of market where you can buy everything and is where the locals will come to buy any electronics, clothing, food and more.

When Should You Visit Moroni?

Moroni is best visited during its cooler and dryer season which lasts from May until October. Although cooler the temperatures are still hot and more bearable than during the hot and wet season. The hot and wet season lasts the rest of the year and can be horribly humid. With the threat of cyclones this really isn’t a good time to visit Moroni.
