The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean in the world. Spanning the distance between Africa and Asia, it includes some of the world’s most popular island destinations as well as the coast of the Indian subcontinent.

Flights to the Indian Ocean

The islands of the Indian Ocean are well covered when it comes to flights, with numerous airlines offering a variety of routes from the UK. Although they share the same ocean these Indian Ocean islands each have their own appeal.

Madagascar

Madagascar is by far the largest island in the Indian Ocean, and is the fourth largest island in the world. It’s situated just to the east of Africa though it has more Asian than African influences. Flights from the UK arrive at the nation’s capital, Antananarivo (airport code: TNR) and are indirect with one stop. Airlines include British Airways, Corse Air, Air France, South African Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and BMI.

Comoros

The three islands of Comoros are situated to the north west of Madagascar and despite some lovely scenery and diving opportunities this poor country does not attract many tourists. However it does benefit from direct flights from the UK with Yemenia-Yemen Airways, or two stop flights with the likes of Egyptair, BMI, Lufthansa, Air France, and British Airways.

Seychelles

To the north of Comoros is the far more popular Seychelles. This island nation has long been attracting tourists for its fantastic beaches, and there are a total of 115 islands spread over a large area to enjoy. The only international airport is on Mahe Island near Victoria, the capital city. Mahe Island International Airport (airport code: SEZ) serves flights from the UK with one or two stops. Airlines include British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, BMI, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air Seychelles, Kenya Airways, and Eurofly.

Mauritius and Reunion

Mauritius, and the smaller nearby island of Reunion, are situated in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, and both offer great beaches and scenery. Flights to Mauritius land at the Plaisance International Airport (airport code: MRU) and are non-stop from the UK with Air Mauritius, or indirect with South African Airways, Emirates, and Air France.

The Saint Denis Airport (airport code: RUN) on Reunion serves indirect flights from the UK with airlines such as Air Mauritius, Air France, Corse Air, and Air Austral.

Maldives

Further north in the Indian Ocean, closer to the southern tip of India is the Maldives. This exclusive holiday destination is expensive to visit but worth it for the amazing beaches and excellent diving opportunities! Flights to the Maldives land near the capital city at the Male International Airport (airport code: MLE) and are indirect with one or two connections. Numerous airlines include SriLankan Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, LTU, Malaysia Airlines, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and BMI.

Sri Lanka

The island of Sri Lanka is situated in the Indian Ocean just 19 miles off the coast of India. Apart from great beaches, this Indian Ocean island includes fantastic scenery and ancient cities. Flights from the UK can be direct, as with SriLankan Airlines, or one or two stops with airlines such as Qatar Airways, Jet Airways, British Airways, Emirates, Kuwait Airways, Irtysh Avia, Virgin Atlantic, and Qantas; flying to the capital city, Colombo.
