The Taj Mahal
India’s most famous monument , and one of the most famous in the world is the Taj Mahal. It was built between 1631 and 1648 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife and so it is essentially a tomb. Shah Jahan himself is now also buried inside the Taj Mahal next to his wife.
Note that the Taj Mahal is open every day except Friday and opens as early as 6am. If you are able to come early you’ll have a far more pleasurable experience seeing the building and grounds before all the crowds arrive.
Agra Fort
If you’re coming to Agra to see the Taj Mahal then you must also take time to visit the Agra Fort. Similar to the famous Red Fort in Delhi, Agra Fort is actually in far better condition than the Red Fort. Agra Fort was built by the young king, Emperor Akbar, between 1565 and 1571 as a display of his power.
Unlike many forts of the world which are for defence purposes only, Agra Fort is beautifully designed featuring intricate carvings on the red sandstone walls. Like the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and if you think the outside looks impressive you’re in for a treat when you see the inside! The fort is across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal, though if you’re visiting on a clear day you should see the Taj Mahal from Agra Fort.
Fatehpur Sikri
The last of the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Agra is Fatehpur Sikri, actually situated about 22 miles from Agra itself. This also is an impressive fort built in the 16th century but abandoned after only ten years. Amongst the buildings to see here is one of the largest mosques in India.
