Flights to Amritsar
Places in India
Amritsar is a large and modern city, and a busy tourist hub near the border with Pakistan. It is the central city in the Sikh religion because it is home to the sacred Golden Temple. Between tourists and native Sikhs, more people come to the Golden Temple than the Taj Mahal.
Flights to Amritsar
About 5 miles outside of Amritsar is the Raja Sansi International Airport (airport code: ATQ). There isn't much in the way of public transport, so you'll need to grab a taxi or rent a car to get to the city. The only one-stop flight to Amritsar from the UK is with British Airways, and it transfers in Delhi. If you fly with Emirates Airlines, you'll travel through Dubai and then Delhi. Virgin Atlantic also has a 2-stop flight to Amritsar, with stops in Bombay and Delhi.
Amritsar Tourist Attractions
Golden Temple
The Golden Temple (also called the Harmandir Sahib) is more like several attractions all rolled into one. It's a temple complex with many sights to see, and it’s the main tourist destination in the city. Many Sikh pilgrims also come here so it will always be busy, and as it is a religious place, you will have to cover your head while inside. There is a Sikh museum, and a number of shrines within the complex, with the Golden Temple itself as the main building.
There is also a dining hall that serves free meals, run by volunteers. It's quite an experience but the free food should not be taken advantage of beyond one meal. You can get into the spirit of the temple if you volunteer some time to help out while you are there.
Mata Temple
Mata Temple is an unusual underground temple cave, dedicated to Lal Devi, a modern-day Hindu saint. You'll be walking through tunnels, caves, staircases and even shallow waterways. There are some low openings that you may have to actually crawl through. Some of the hallways are decorated with mirrored mosaics and paintings. Pilgrims come to the Mata Temple in hopes of getting pregnant, or to pray for their children.
Wagah Border
There is a daily flag lowering ceremony that takes place at the border between India and Pakistan, about 19 miles (30km) away from Amritsar. It's actually a large event that many tourists go to see, filled with flags and marching soldiers. It takes place at 4:15pm each day but you should get there at 3:30pm if you want a decent seat. It is a border crossing, so security can be tight.
Water City
A modern amusement park that has both theme park rides as well as water slides. Water City has roller coasters, ferris wheels, go carts and more. The park is only open on the weekends during the winter, but you can visit 7 days a week in the summer months.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum
The Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum sits in the Ram Bagh garden, which is a nice place for a walk as well. Inside, there are exhibits focusing on the era of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, including paintings, manuscripts, armour and many other historical items. They are closed on Mondays, and admission is free.
