Aurangabad is a popular city with tourists, due to the number of impressive historical sites surrounding the city. Some of the monuments are more than 2,000 years old, and there are several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Aurangabad is situated in the west of central India.

Flights to Aurangabad can be booked on a number of major airlines, offering you many choices between 1 and 2 stop routes. Low-cost airline Jet Airways has a flight to Aurangabad that stops once in Bombay, and British Airways does too but usually at twice the cost. British Midland makes 2 connecting stops, in Bahrain and then Bombay. A flight to Aurangabad with Emirates Airlines also transfers twice, but in Dubai and Bombay. The Aurangabad Airport (airport code: IXU) has undergone expansion and is a very modern airport with many facilities. It's about 6 miles (10km) outside the city.

Cave Temples
There are several sites around Aurangabad where you can see ancient Buddhist and Hindu shrines that were carved out of rock, and decorated with paintings and elaborate carvings. Each area has several dozen caves to explore, all within an easy drive from the city. In particular, you should plan on visiting the Ajanta Caves, the Ellora Caves and the Aurangabad Caves.
Daulatabad
Daulatabad is a massive 12th century fort, located about 8 miles (13km) outside of Aurangabad. The ruins and structures are fairly widespread, once encompassing an entire city. You can spend a lot of time here, seeing the ruins and enjoying the lush landscape of the area. The highest point is the Mughal Pavilion, where you can see for miles.
H20 Waterpark
Not far from Daulatabad is the H20 Waterpark, where you can have some refreshing fun after walking around the fort ruins. There are several water slides, splash pads and swimming pools so you can take kids of any age. The park is open 365 days a year, and there is an admission fee to enter.
Bibi Ka Maqbara
The Bib Ka Maqbara is a mausoleum in Aurangabad that strongly resembles a smaller-scale Taj Mahal. It's roughly half the size of the more famous monument but still quite beautiful and an impressive sight to see.
Gautala Wildlife Sanctuary
This heavily forested wildlife park is not far from Aurangabad, and is an excellent place to go hiking. Through the forest, there are rivers, waterfalls and many species of birds and animals. There is a sizable population of sloth bears and wild boars, and you can occasionally see a leopard. There are guided tour hikes through the park twice a day which can be a good way to learn more about the area.
Siddharth Garden
If you want to stay in the city for some green space, visit the Siddharth Garden. It's a large landscaped park that also includes an aquarium and a zoo. The zoo houses many small animals, but also has exhibits of reptiles, big cats and elephants.
When Should You Visit Aurangabad?
Aurangabad can get exceptionally hot in the late spring when temperatures will hit 40C (104F) during the day. April and May are the hottest months, with June and March coming a close second. To avoid the worst of the heat as well as the rainy season, you should try to schedule your trip to Aurangabad for some time between November and January. Daily temperatures don't usually go above 30C (86F) and the rain is minimal.
