Bhavnagar is one of the largest cities in the Indian state of Gujarat, in the west of India. The city is home to many cultural and historical sites.

The Bhavnagar Airport (airport code: BHU) serves daily flights to Bhavnagar with Jet Airways, and regular international service from a number of other major airlines as well. From the UK Virgin Atlantic and British Airways both offer 1-stop flights to Bhavnagar with a connection in Bombay. There are a number of 2-stop routes to choose from as well. British Midland and Gulf Air travel through Bahrain and Bombay, and Jet Airways connects first in Brussels and then in Bombay.

Blackbuck National Park
The largest attraction near Bhavnagar is the Blackbuck National Park, about 40 miles (70km) away from the city. It's a grassland wildlife preserve where herds of rare Blackbuck antelopes are commonly seen. Aside from the antelope, you can also see wolves, jackals, jungle cats and wild pigs. There is an entry fee to see the park, where you can either drive around or walk. A small guest house also serves meals.
Palitana Temples
This collection of temples is considered the most holy place in the Jain religion, and it's a popular pilgrimage site for the faithful. There are more than 800 temples and statues, all carved in marble and stone. The walkway to the top of the hill is quite steep, and it is considered disrespectful to bring food along the way. It's around 30 miles (50km) away from Bhavnagar but there are regular trains and buses that can take you.
Barton Library and Museum
The Barton Library is a large old library that is more than a 100 years old, and has many displays from local history as well as the obvious book collection. You can see exhibits of coins, wood carvings, farm tools and other folk art objects as well. Mahatma Gandhi has visited the library in the past, and there is memorabilia surrounding him on display. They are closed on Mondays, and have limited hours on Sunday mornings.
Takhteshwar Temple
A large white marble temple, the Takhteshwar Temple is built on a hill in the middle of the city and it is a lovely place for a walk or a picnic. There are great views of the whole city from the temple, which was built in 1893 and dedicated to Shiva. The hill isn't a difficult climb, so it’s a suitable place for a casual walk.
Victoria Park
Towards the south-west of the city is a protected forest area where you can walk, and watch the birds. Krishna Kunj Lake is within the park, and the best place to see water birds, or to just enjoy the water.
When Should You Visit Bhavnagar?
It's generally hot in Bhavnagar, with the highest temperatures being hit around April and May. Daytime highs can reach over 35C (95F). Heavy rains between June and September make those months less than ideal for travel as well. So the best times to visit Bhavnagar would be from December until February. Temperatures are around 30C (86F) but it cools down considerably during the evenings, and there is minimal rain.
