Goa Tourist Attractions
Goa represents different things to different people – on the one hand it’s a beautiful part of India where there are some of the world’s best beaches and a great climate with which to enjoy them. To others it’s a place of rich history and culture and offers some amazing world heritage status architecture. Of course many tourists come to Goa to experience both of these aspects! Some of the attractions include the following:
Old Goa
The Basilica of Bom (or Good) Jesus is one of Goa’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites and it’s located in the part of the state known as Old Goa. Old Goa was the colonial capital of Goa and in fact much of the remains of this old settlement have been listed as a World Heritage Site.
The Basilica of Bom (Good) Jesus is one of the attractions here. It was completed in the year 1605 when the Portuguese had colonial power over Goa and it contains the mortal remains of St Francis Xavier. Old Goa has several other impressive churches from this period too including the beautiful white Se Cathedral, and the sprawling Church of St Francis of Assisi.
Panaji
Panaji is the current capital of Goa and it’s a lot larger and busier in comparison yet still has a certain charm and appeal about it. Landmarks here include the Adilshahi Palace, Church Square, and several churches. In February each year the streets really come alive with the Goa carnival, while the nearby beach of Miramar is one of Goa’s beach hotspots.
Dona Paula Beach is probably more popular with tourists though, and this is located about 4 miles from the streets of Panaji.
Other Attractions in Goa
There are numerous other small towns and villages to discover both on the coast and inland if you want to get a real sense for the culture of Goa, plus there are many other tourist attractions to visit too. Ponda is in North of Goa and is known as the temple heartland of the state. There are also wildlife sanctuaries and bird sanctuaries to explore such as the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary.
When Should You Visit Goa?
Goa is most popular with overseas tourists during the winter when temperatures are hot and there’s hardly any rainfall. The most popular times are from December to February but the rains don’t really start until May then there’s the monsoon period between June and September.
