Places in India
India is situated in Southern Asia, and after China it has the second largest population in the world. There are many cities in India which have millions of inhabitants, and although busy they draw tourists to their architecture, culture and history.
India is the 7th largest country in the world and hence there are multiple entry points for flights to India. The six major entry points are Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata. New Delhi is the capital city and hence the popular choice for many visitors to India.
From the UK many airlines offer flights to India. Flying to New Delhi (airport code: DEL) you can choose from direct flights, or flights with one or two stops. Direct flights are offered by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic who both have flights from Heathrow to Delhi, or choose one stop flights with the following airlines: Qatar Airways, Irtysh Avia, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Etihad Airways, Emirates, Northwest Airlines, Air France, Aeroflot, Austrian, KLM and BMI.
The Tourist Attractions of India
Being such a large country there are countless tourist attractions in India. Visitors would need to spend months in the country to be able to see most of the important destinations, however, there are a number of sites which stand out above the rest and these have been detailed below.
The Taj Mahal
Think of India and the Taj Mahal will immediately spring to mind. This spectacular site should not be missed by visitors to India. Located in the city of Agra, the Taj Mahal, meaning ‘Crown Palace’ was built between the years of 1631 and 1648 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jehan in memory of his wife. The beautiful building is made of white marble and is set in substantial grounds which also contain additional buildings as well as ornamental gardens and reflecting pools.
Agra Fort
Agra Fort, also located in the city of Agra, is a palace fortress which has been standing fro longer than the Taj Mahal. Agra Fort was built between 1565 and 1571. The fortress is still in a relatively good state of repair, though it is often overlooked in favour of the famous Red Fort in Delhi.
Delhi
Delhi is an absolutely huge city which contains the capital of India, New Delhi. Delhi is one of the oldest cities in the world as is full of history. The Red Fort is one of the city’s top tourist attractions and hence puzzling why money raised from tourists is not used to restore it to a better condition. The Red Fort was also built by the emperor Shah Jehan and was completed in 1648. Amongst Delhi’s other important and impressive sites are the Qutub Complex, the India Gate Monument and Humayun’s Tomb.
Goa
Goa is like another world when compared to cities like Delhi, and easy to forget that you’re still in India! This is a great beach destination which has been gaining in popularity especially over the last decade or so, and makes a good place for a holiday throughout the year. If you’re interested in some if the Indian culture Goa has this too, so presents a good introduction to the country.
When Should You Visit India?
The whole of India cannot be categorised into one climate because of its size therefore it’s difficult to generalise, but India is affected by two monsoons – the southwest monsoon happens between June and September and affects most of the country, and the northeast monsoon occurs between October and February. In general the whole of India has hot summers, whilst places like Goa also benefit from mild winters, averaging at a pleasant high of around 25C.
