Jaipur is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Rajasthan in the east of India. It’s a beautiful city, popularly known as the Pink City, and has many excellent tourist attractions, making this one of the top tourist destinations in India.

Flights to Jaipur

Located in the nearby town of Sanganer, but only 8 miles (13km) from Japir itself, the Jaipur International Airport (airport code: JAI) handles mainly domestic flights to Jaipur. You can book a flight to Jaipur from the UK with one connection, on Virgin Atlantic or British Airways. They both transfer in Bombay. You'll stop twice with Lufthansa, first in Frankfurt and then in Bombay. KLM takes a different route, and connects in Amsterdam and then in Delhi for its flight to Jaipur.

Jaipur Tourist Attractions

Founded in 1727 Jaipur is an historic city and the first planned city of India. It was the capital of the princely state of Jaipur during the British rule and features some outstanding architecture from different periods in the city’s history. Of the many landmarks and attractions, here are just a handful of Jaipur’s most popular.

Jaipur’s Forts

There are numerous forts in Jaipur, each as spectacular as the last. Amber Fort is one great example though it’s actually located 7 miles (11km) outside of Jaipur in the town of Amber, from which it gets its name. The architecture blends Hindu and Mughal elements and has some truly beautiful features. The fort is set up on a slight hill overlooking the Maota Lake and with views off into the distance.

Jaigarh Fort is said to be one of the most spectacular in India. It too is situated outside of Jaipur (about 9 miles) and has an amazing hilltop location that actually overlooks Amber Fort, and the two forts are connected by passages.

For views over Jaipur itself you should visit the Nahargarh Fort as its location in the Aravalli Hills provides spectacular city views. This fort was built in 1734 and though partially in ruins now it still features some ornate frescos and corridors.

Palaces in Jaipur

While the forts of Jaipur are impressive its palaces and monuments could be considered even more so. Hawa Mahal is one of the palaces and its name translates as Palace of the Winds. It was built in 1799 and its main feature is the 953 small windows with beautiful and intricate lattice work. The City Palace complex is also spectacular as it consists of a number of separate palaces and includes the City Palace Musuem.

Rambagh Palace is another of Jaipur’s palaces. It was once the home of the Maharaja of Jaipur and is now a luxury hotel and wonderful place to stay when visiting Jaipur.

Jantar Mantar

Jantar Mantar is a monument that deserves its own entry for its uniqueness! This is a collection of astronomical instruments that were built between 1727 and 1734 by Maharaja Jai Singh II. The site was modelled after a similar complex that he had built in Delhi. To the unknowing tourist the site looks like a collection of bizarre structures though in fact they all serve a purpose such as a sundial, observation deck and more.

When Should You Visit Jaipur?

Apart from the monsoon season (June to September) Jaipur is a pleasant city to visit during most of the year. April to early July is considered to be summer when temperatures are highest (around 30C as a daily high) and humidity is high. Winter is from November to February and temperatures are usually mild at this time of year.
