Jodhpur Tourist Attractions

Mehrangarh Fort

The Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest in all of India, and there is much to see when you visit. Not only is there a large museum at the site, but the fort itself holds several elaborate palaces, courtyards, halls, temples and other buildings. This is much more lavish than your standard military fort and many of the rooms are furnished and decorated in period style, illustrating various points in Jodhpur’s history from the late 1500s until the 1800s.

Jaswant Thada

Jaswant Thada is a beautiful white marble memorial building commemorating Maharja Jaswant Singh II and was built in 1899. There are several tombs inside, and the outside gardens hold gazebos, flower gardens and a lake for some pleasant places to walk. It’s not far from the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, and makes a nice place to stop after exploring there.

Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum

The grand Edwardian-styled Umaid Bhawan Palace is now a museum, and is filled with many artefacts from the region's history. Part of the complex is now a hotel, so don't be surprised that that the museum only takes up a section of the building. There are displays of antique clocks, vintage cars, weaponry, artwork and many other items.

Jodhpur Old City

The old part of Jodhpur is filled with history and you should take some time to walk through this part of town just to see the buildings and shops. Many houses in this quarter are painted blue, and for this reason it’s sometimes called the Blue City. There are thick walls around this part of the city, and you’ll also find a number of excellent open air markets around here too.

Temples

There are a number of Hindu and Jain temples throughout the city of Jodhpur, as well as Sikh gurudwaras. To get a taste of the city's religious history, plan on visiting at least a few. The Chamunda Mataji temple is near the Mehrangarh Fort and others within the city include the Baba Ramdeo temple and the large Achal Nath Shivalaya.

When Should You Visit Jodhpur?

Summer months are quite hot in Jodhpur, but visiting during the winter is much more comfortable. April, May and June should be avoided as it will reach 39C (104F) during the day on average. After that, it will still be over 30C (90F) from July until November though. So come in either December or January, and it will be a much cooler 23C (74F) during the day.
