Kozhikode Tourist Attractions
Perhaps not as well known as some of India’s other large cities Kozhikode still offers a good selection of tourist attractions. The coastal location makes this a popular city with locals, who come to enjoy the beaches and other outdoor activities on offer.
Kozhikode Beach
By Western standards you may not think this beach is much to look at, but it’s certainly very popular with the locals. It’s remained fairly unexploited, so in some ways it’s nice to come here and enjoy a relaxing walk or sit and watch the waves. There are two piers that are close to falling down, though these were very important historically as they were used for loading ships with spices and other goods. Kozhikode Beach is also home to a historic lighthouse, an aquarium, and a seafarers’ memorial.
Lion’s Park is also right near to Kozhikode Beach. This is an amusement park with a number of rides for children and attractions for adults too.
Kozhikode Big Bazaar
In English it is the Big Bazaar, and in the local language it’s Veliyangadi, and it’s right in the heart of the historic centre of Kozhikode. This isn’t a tourist oriented bazaar with souvenirs and tacky goods, as the locals still shop here today, but it does give visitors the chance to experience the local culture up close and personal. The narrow lanes of the bazaar have a 600+ year old history after all, and haven’t changed too much in that time!
SM Street
For a more modern look at shopping in Kozhikode visit SM Street. The name stands for ‘Sweetmeat’; a word that was historically used by European traders, and though this street is also about 600 years old it’s not as claustrophobic as the lanes of Veliyangadi.
Temples in Kozhikode
Many visitors to India are hoping to visit some of its beautiful temples, and you’ll find several here in Kozhikode. The most important one spiritually is Tali Shiva Temple and it’s thought to have been built when Calicut was founded in the 12th century.
An even older temple pre-dates the foundation of Calicut as a city, as it was built about two hundred years earlier. Panniyankara Bhagavati Temple is on a small hill on the side of the Kallayi River.
When Should You Visit Kozhikode?
Kozhikode is hot and humid year round, with only a few degrees separating summer from winter. Finding the right time to visit is difficult as the slightly cooler weather is better during the summer, yet this is the monsoon season, so very wet! Virtually dry weather occurs from December through to March when the average high is around 31 to 33C.
