Lucknow Tourist Attractions
Bara Imambara
Also known as the Asafi Imambara, this Shia shrine is one of the major landmarks of Lucknow and was built in 1784. The architecture is of a Mughal ornamental style and it was one of the last building projects of the period not to incorporate any European styling. Quite unintentionally a labyrinth of passageways was created by the unique engineering used to structure the building, and you can wander around this maze with a good chance of getting lost! The size and scale of the Bara Imambara are quite breathtaking, and your entry ticket also includes entrance into the Husainabad Clock Tower and the Chhota Imambara.
Chhota Imambara
The architecture of Chhota Imambara is quite beautiful and it was built as a mausoleum by, and for, Muhammad Ali Shah in 1838. The complex also includes a tower, called Satkhanda, meaning tower of seven storeys. It was intended that the tower would be seven storeys high but the construction ended at only four storeys when Ali Shah died in 1842.
Husainabad Clock Tower
The final memorial in Lucknow that’s included with your entry ticket to Bara Imambara, is the Husainabad Clock Tower. This is a major British landmark and it sits adjacent to the Husainabad Picture Gallery where there are life size portraits of the Nawabs of Oudh.
Lucknow Zoo
Covering a fairly large area within the centre of Lucknow is Lucknow Zoo where there are 97 different species represented and around 850 animals in total. These include species from around the world and those that are more local, such as the Royal Bengal Tiger, the White Tiger, and the Asiatic Elephant. For children visiting there is also a toy train as well as a vintage train. Lucknow Zoo is also home to the State Museum.
Kukrail Reserve Forest
Though there are parks and open spaces within the city of Lucknow it’s a busy place so it’s nice to get out of the city for a while. The Kukrail Reserve Forest is a nice place to do this and it’s just 5 miles from Lucknow. The reserve was established in order to breed and conserve crocodiles and it’s also a popular picnicking spot.
When Should You Visit Lucknow?
You should never be cold when visiting Lucknow as the city has average highs ranging from 23C to 41C across the year! Winters are really the best time to visit as the temperatures are more bearable at this time of year and it’s essentially dry in terms of rainfall, with just a little falling. The rainy season starts in June and peaks in July and August. By October rainfall levels are dropping once again. The hottest weather comes just before the rainy season and gets hottest in May when the average high is an unbearable 41C.
