Mangalore Tourist Attractions
Considered as the gateway to the state of Karnataka, Mangalore is a coastal city that, like many others in India, is growing at a great rate of knots. Despite the growth, Mangalore remains one of the cleanest cities in India so visiting tourists don’t need to worry so much about smog and unclean conditions here as they do in some other cities of India.
Mangalore’s Beaches
To tourists Mangalore may not be renowned as one of India’s top beach destinations, but it does have some very nice, and most importantly, clean beaches to offer. You probably wouldn’t come here for a beach holiday but the fact that it has good beaches is an added bonus, and lets you have relaxing days in between your sightseeing.
Tannirbhavi Beach is one of the closest to the city centre but even so it’s a quiet beach where you can go swimming and sunbathing, or slightly further out is Sutatkal Beach where there’s a pretty lighthouse.
Temples in Mangalore
There are a number of temples and other religious buildings in Mangalore and of these the Gokarnanatheshwara Temple is one of the most beautiful. Construction began in 1908 and more recently it had a major renovation. The most striking feature is the gold tower rising from the entrance way, and the use of gold and red colours gives the temple an almost oriental feel. This is one of the more modern temples in Mangalore, so if you’d like to see a far older one, head a couple of miles out of the city centre to Mangaladevi Temple which has its origins in the 9th century.
Churches in Mangalore
There are not only Hindu temples in Mangalore but churches and chapels too, reflecting the diverse cultures that live and have lived here through the years. Milagres Church is one. It was originally completed in 1680 but was destroyed in 1784. Milagres was rebuilt in 1811, but suffered a collapse in 1911 and again had to be rebuilt.
There is also St Aloysius Chapel in Mangalore which was built in 1884. The chapel is beautiful on the outside but even more so inside with its stunning paintings that cover nearly every wall and ceiling.
