Patna Tourist Attractions

Patna was established as a city back in 490BC when it was called Pataliputra. Unlike many other ancient cities that have come and gone, Patna has remained in some form or other during the entire period since it was established, making this one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world.

Ancient Sites in Patna

There are some remains of the ancient city from the time it was known as Pataliputra. Two sites exist within the present day city boundaries: Kumhrar and Agam Kuam. Agam Kuam means ‘unfathomable well’, as in a water well, and so the main feature is the 105 feet deep well that has a small structure on top. Next to the well is the Shitala Devi temple and the site also includes some ancient and medieval sculptures.

Kumhrar is the remains of an ancient city that has findings dating back to 600 BC. The Assembly Hall of 80 Pillars would have been the main feature, and only one pillar now remains, plus several other building remnants have been excavated including a Buddhist monastery, and the Durakhi Devi Temple.

Patna Museum

The Patna Museum is a must visit attraction if you have any interest in the history and culture of Patna. It’s housed within a substantial building that was constructed specifically for use as the museum in 1917, during the British Raj. Despite the size of this building a new one is being constructed because the original isn’t large enough to display the extensive collections which include archaeological findings, art, coins, statues and more.

Patna Zoo

The common name for this attraction is Patna Zoo, though officially it is the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park. The park is a zoo and botanical garden in one and covers over 150 acres of land in Patna. There are around 800 animals from 110 different species, plus 300 species of trees, herbs and plants.

When Should You Visit Patna?

Winters are really the best time to visit Patna as temperatures are pleasant and there’s hardly any rainfall. Between November and February average highs are still ranging between 23 and 28C. In April and May temperatures shoot up, just prior to the monsoon season, reaching an average high of 39C in May, then from June to September you’ll see very heavy rainfall.
