In north west India the city of Rajkot is the fourth largest in the state of Gujarat and is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. There are numerous tourist attractions to see and visit in Rajkot and the city was home to Gandhi for a period.

Flights to Rajkot

International flights to Rajkot will have to transfer elsewhere in India as the Rajkot Airport (airport code: RAJ) only handles domestic flights. Only Jet Airways has a flight to Rajkot with one connection from the UK, and that's in Mumbai. Alternatively, you can fly with British Midland and connect in Bahrain and then Mumbai, or with Lufthansa for transfers in Frankfurt and Mumbai. A flight to Rajkot with Northwest Airlines also has a European route with stop-overs in Amsterdam and Mumbai.

Rajkot Tourist Attractions

Rajkot has a good selection of tourist attractions including the usual suspects that you would expect to find in most Indian cities: British colonial architecture as well as ornate Indian construction, museums, gardens and more, making Rajkot an interesting city to visit.

Mahatma Gandhi in Rajkot

Mahatma Gandhi lived in Rajkot for a few years during his childhood and you can see that Rajkot is proud of this fact. The home in which he lived has been converted into a memorial and museum, named Gandhi Smitri, where you can browse the personal artefacts, photographs and items that either belonged to him or are about his life.

The school in which Gandhi was educated has been renamed in his honour and is one of the city’s well known landmarks. Mohandas Gandhi High School is actually one of the oldest educational institutions in India today and the building was constructed during British rule in 1853. The architecture somewhat resembles the Tower of London!

Jubilee Garden

There are several gardens and parks in Rajkot and Jubilee Garden is the best known. It’s a large park in the centre of Rajkot and is well known for its numerous monuments from colonial times including Connaught Hall.

Museums in Rajkot

Other than the Gandhi Smitri Museum Rajkot has several others that might interest tourists. The Watson Museum is located within Jubilee Garden and was established in 1888. It’s a museum of human history and culture and was named after Colonel John Watson.

The Rotary Dolls Museum is another museum in Rajkot, and as the name suggests this one is dedicated to dolls. Featured are over 1600 dolls from India and around the world; in fact 102 countries are represented here!

Temples in Rajkot

As well as the British colonial architecture there is traditional Indian architecture here in Rajkot too. The temples are a good way to see some of this architecture and they include the Universal Temple (Jagat Mandir) built in 1934, and Ramkrishna Ashram with its terracotta coloured exterior.

When Should You Visit Rajkot?

Rajkot is hot all year round and mostly dry except for during the monsoon season, between mid June to October. You’ll want to avoid this time of year and also the few months leading up to monsoon as these are the hottest. The winter months are probably the most pleasant time to visit Rajkot with average highs in the high 20’s C.
