Places in the Maldives
The Maldives, which are also known as the Maldive Islands, are situated to the south west of India, in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives is an island nation and consists of an archipelago of 1,190 coral islands. 200 of the islands are inhabited, and another 80 are designated as tourist resorts.
There are a good number of airlines offering flights between the UK and the Maldives. The main international airport is at the capital, Male. Male International Airport (airport code: MLE) is located on an island right next to the capital city. Most flights from the UK will have one connection, though some airlines also have two stop flights. Choose from airlines LTU, SriLankan Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Malaysia Airlines, BMI, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines for on stop flights flying via a variety of different cities. Depending on connections, one of the quickest routes is via Dubai with Emirates from London Gatwick.
The Tourist Attractions of the Maldives
The Maldives has always been quite an exclusive holiday destination and it appears it will remain this way for the foreseeable future! The reason for this is because it is an expensive country to stay in and expensive to buy goods in too.
The Maldives will primarily appeal to visitors who are looking for great weather and a relaxing beach resort holiday, or to those who enjoy diving, as these really are the two main attractions of the islands. The tourist industry has grown up around two kinds of accommodation – self contained island resorts, of which there are about 80 in total to choose from, and live-aboards i.e. boats on which you live on whilst they travel around. There is a third option, which is really only open to the very wealthy visitors, and that it to charter your own luxury private yacht!
The only ‘hotel’ accommodation is within the capital city Male. Usually visitors will make use of these hotels in between landing from the UK and before heading off to their final destination. Male is not somewhere you would want to spend your whole holiday, but if you have some time to spare there are a few places of interest in the city. Sultan Park and the National Museum are amongst the attractions, as is the Islamic Centre, Independence Square and the Friday Mosque.
If you’re visiting the Maldives for diving, or perhaps you’ve never been diving before but want to try it, the Maldives is said to have some of the best diving in the world so it’s a great place to learn! The water quality here is fantastic which means you get the most incredible views of the coral reefs and abundant marine life in the waters around the atolls and islands.
Some of the island resorts are set up to specifically cater to the needs of divers, and whilst these are convenient you may find there’s few other facilities here other than the diving. The other option for divers is the live-aboard boats. These may be less expensive than the resorts and the benefit is that you get to travel around to all the best dive sites.
When Should You Visit the Maldives?
With its tropical climate the Maldives makes a perfect holiday destination throughout the year as there is little variation in the temperature. The average across the year is usually around 30C. However, the weather may be hot but the Maldives does get affected by the southwest monsoon. The wettest months are usually June to August, though rainfall is common from April to October, suggesting that this is a better winter destination!
