Port Louis Tourist Attractions

Being the capital city Port Louis is quite well developed in terms of tourist attractions and makes for a great base for any holiday to Mauritius. The city has a number of tourist attractions, some of the most popular being…

Natural History Museum

Though not a very large or modern museum, admission is free to the Natural History Museum and it's the only place in the world to see a complete skeleton of the extinct dodo bird! Most of the exhibits feature local wildlife and other natural history displays. The museum is on Chausser Street, not far from the waterfront area.

Port Louis Central Market

An open-air market filled with clothing, souvenirs, curios, and fresh fruits and vegetables, Port Louis Central Market can be very busy and loud. With the aromatic fast food stalls throughout the marketplace your sense of smell may be working over time but there’s plenty of opportunity to try out different foods! Expect to haggle for any purchases, but the prices can still be a bit high. Even if you don't buy anything, the market is a great place to browse and soak up some atmosphere.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolan Botanic Gardens

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolan Botanic Gardens may be a bit of a mouthful but this is an attractive place to visit! Covering about 100 acres, the park is full of manicured flower beds and interesting plant life. The water pond covered in giant Queen Victoria lily pads is a popular sight in the gardens. You can walk at your leisure or hire a tour guide to show you around.

Cauden Waterfront

The Cauden Waterfront area is a modern shopping complex, with boutique shops, restaurants, dance clubs and a casino. There are several hotels on the waterfront as well, and it's a very lively part of the city if you are looking for some nightlife excitement.

Champs de Mars

If you're in Port Louis on a Saturday in the summer or autumn, check out the thoroughbred horse races at Champs de Mars. It's a very lively place during the races with the crowds cheering with each race. The track is right in the middle of the city, and horse racing is a popular sport in Port Louis. Betting is common, but small bets are permitted so you can have some fun without losing your shirt!
