Reunion Tourist Attractions
Reunion is quite a small island but has plenty to appeal to visitors who enjoy being outdoors, hiking, and seeing nature and natural scenery. The island measures 39 miles long by 28 miles wide, covering a land area of 970 square miles, and is volcanic. Reunion is often compared to Hawaii for their similarities – both are located on hot spots so they share similar volcanic activity, and also have similar climates.
Hiking and Scenery in Reunion
With around 625 miles of hiking trails Reunion is definitely a hiker’s paradise. You could spend weeks here and only touch on the surface of the island’s hiking trails, seeing a variety of spectacular and beautiful scenery as you hike your way around. There are many remote parts of Reunion which are in fact only accessible on foot, unless you happen to have a helicopter at your disposal! So hiking is a great way to get to see parts of the island which you otherwise would not see.
Amongst the places you can visit by hiking only is a caldera which was formed when the volcano collapsed. There are three calderas in total on Reunion, and this one, called Cirque de Mafate is actually home to a village. The other two, called Cilaos and Salazie are popular spots for hiking too.
Saint-Denis
A good starting or ending point for a holiday in Reunion is the capital, and largest city, Saint-Denis. This is an attractive city and the kind of place that many visitors enjoy spending time in with its architecture, museums, art galleries, parks, and more on offer.
Reunion’s Other Cities
Saint-Paul is the second largest city in Reunion, or there’s Saint-Gilles where some of Reunion’s famous beautiful beaches are situated. These ones are lovely white sand beaches, whilst over in the small town of Etang-Sale you’ll find wonderful volcanic black sand beaches.
When Should You Visit Reunion?
Being located quite near to the equator Reunion has a tropical climate where the temperatures stay warm and don’t vary much throughout the year. If you’re looking for warm to hot weather then any time of the year would be good to visit Reunion, however, there is a rainy and a dry season to take into account; the rainy season being from November to April, and the dry season from May to November.
