The island of Mahe is the largest island in the Seychelles and is home to both the international airport, and the capital city. This popular destination features wonderful white sandy beaches and clear blue waters and is situated in the Indian Ocean to the east of Africa, and north east of Madagascar.

Flights to Mahe Island

Flights to Mahe Island arrive at the Seychelles International Airport (airport code: SEZ), the only major airport in the Seychelles. The airport is just a few miles outside of Victoria, the main city on the island. Flights to Mahe Island from London usually have 1 connection, though Air Seychelles does have a 2-stop route. Flights to Mahe can be booked with Air France, with a transfer in Paris, or with Qatar Airways for a transfer in Doha. Air Seychelles is the national airline and they offer numerous flights to other islands in the Seychelles if you want to explore beyond Mahe Island.

Mahe Island Tourist Attractions

Mahe Island offers everything you would expect from a tropical destination and is a wonderful place to come for a relaxing beach holiday. Mahe and the Seychelles is not just about the beaches though, as this great island has amazing scenery and culture to offer too.

Mahe Island Beaches

But first the beaches! Soft white sand makes its way down to the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Relax on the beach for a day, soaking up the sun, listening to the waves gently splashing ashore. There are many excellent beaches on Mahe Island but probably the most popular is Beau Vallon. This is more commercialized than some others, offering resorts and hotels, plus some great places to eat, right on the beach!

Victoria

When you fancy a day away from the beaches Victoria is a great place to go. This is the main town on Mahe Island and it’s actually the capital city of the Seychelles. The small size of Victoria gives the city much of its charm – it’s one of the smallest capital cities in the world!

Take time to wander around the streets of Victoria as you’ll see some lovely colonial buildings. Two to look out for include the practically untouched post office and courthouse, plus there’s the city’s clock tower, its’ most famous attraction. And if you like museums, Victoria is home to two – the Natural History Museum and the National Museum of History, both of which give visitors more insight into the history, culture and wildlife of the Seychelles.

Nightlife on Mahe Island

There are many places you can go in the world if you want a really buzzing nightlife, but Mahe Island probably isn’t one of them! Hotels and resorts will doubtless offer entertainment and nightlife of some description, but if you want to go out for a night on the town you’ll still find some nightclubs in Victoria which are fun and friendly. This may not be Ibiza but you should be guaranteed a fun night out anyway!

Scenic Mahe Island

The beaches are beautiful but Mahe Island has more to offer in terms of scenery and nature. There are several national parks, including the offshore Ste Anne Marine National Park where you can go diving and snorkelling, plus the Port Launay Marine National Park, and Ternay Marine National Park, while inland there are forests that are home to rare and endangered species.

When Should You Visit Mahe Island?

Sitting just south of the equator Mahe Island has an equatorial climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. November to March is usually the rainy season so you’d be better off visiting outside of these months when you can expect relatively dry and hot weather. The annual average high temperature is 29C (84F).
