Situated in the south of the southern state and island of Tasmania, Hobart is the state capital and largest city in Tasmania and a popular tourist destination with various attractions to see.
Flights to Hobart
International flights to Hobart arrive at the Hobart International Airport (airport code: HBA). The airport is situated in a suburb of the city, called Cambridge, about 12.5 miles (20km) from the city centre. Although still considered an international airport, all flights to Hobart come via the mainland of Australia and hence from the UK flights to Hobart will be indirect, with two stops. Airlines include British Airways, Qantas Airways, Emirates, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Virgin Blue Airlines, V Australia, Cathay Pacific, and Air New Zealand all of which will involve a stop in either Melbourne or Sydney.
Hobart Tourist Attractions
Hobart is an attractive city, and though the largest in Tasmania it’s still quite small with a population of around 210,000. Set on the River Derwent, just off the southern coast of Tasmania, Hobart features the recipe for a beautiful city with water all around and a framing of mountains.
Hobart was founded in 1803 as a penal colony, much like the rest of Tasmania, and successfully grew into a thriving city because of its natural deep water port. Now it’s the centre for tourism, culture, entertainment and more in Tasmania and has some great little attractions for visitors to enjoy.
Historic Hobart
The older parts of Hobart are some of the most attractive as you’ll find old Georgian and Victorian architectural styles here. On a Saturday morning don’t miss the Salamanca Market held in Salamanca Place as this is a tradition of Hobart and well worth spending a few hours over.
Hobart Museums
A selection of museums and visitor attractions in Hobart includes the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery where you can find out more about the history of Hobart and the island. There’s the Maritime Museum of Tasmania which focuses on the maritime history of the island, or for something completely different visit the Cadbury’s Chocolate Factory Visitor Centre!
Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens
Just outside the city centre is the historic Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. The gardens were established in 1818 so are nearly as old as the city, and display many native Tasmanian plants, plus a one of a kind Subantarctic Plant House!
Boat Cruises in Hobart
Visitors who fancy taking a boat cruise have several options to do so here in Hobart as there’s both the river and sea to discover! Several boat tour companies offer different cruises including one in Hobart Harbour and out to Peppermint Bay. Another goes along the Derwent River and into the Southern Ocean where sites include the oldest lighthouse in Australia.
Nightlife in Hobart
Hobart is full of many attractive little pubs, restaurants and hotels, but has a more modern side too. The Wrest Point Casino for example is a modern complex that features a hotel, casino, revolving restaurant with views over Hobart, and live entertainment.
When Should You Visit Hobart?
Hobart has a temperate climate which some visitors will find surprisingly cool if imagining the heat that mainland Australia can experience! There are four distinct seasons, and really summer (December to February) is the best time to visit for good weather. Temperatures then are in the low 20’s C (low 70’s F). Rainfall should be expected at any time of the year though overall February is usually the driest month.
