Flights to Launceston

About 9 miles (15km) outside of the city, is the Launceston Airport (airport code: LST) which is one of the largest airports in Tasmania and a major travel hub. A flight to Launceston can be booked with either 1 or 2 transfers, but there are no direct routes from the UK owing to the sheer distance if nothing else. Virgin Atlantic, Qantas and British Airways all have their connection in Sydney. Thai Airways International has flights to Launceston with connections in Bangkok and Sydney. Another 2-stop route can be booked with Emirates Airlines from the UK, and travels through Dubai and then Melbourne.

Launceston Tourist Attractions

Launceston is one of the oldest cities in Australia as it was founded in 1806 and grew substantially after tin and gold were discovered nearby. Being at the end of the estuary of the River Tamar Launceston was an obvious choice to be used as an export centre for the tin and gold. Many buildings remain from this period of growth in the 19th century; in fact Launceston has the largest number of these buildings in Australia! History and scenery combine to make Launceston one of Tasmania’s top tourist destinations, plus the city is well located to be used as a base for exploring other parts of beautiful Tasmania.

Cataract Gorge

If you see only one thing in Launceston it’s like to be Cataract Gorge, the city’s most popular attraction! This scenic gorge was carved out by the river and you can get close to the edge by walking along the King’s Bridge – Cataract Walk, a path along the northern edge of the gorge. For a bird’s eye view there are two choices for seeing the gorge, a bridge or a chairlift. The chairlift was installed in 1972 and remains the longest single span chairlift in the world, covering 457 metres!

Launceston Museums

There are several museums in Launceston, covering a range of history of the city and Tasmania. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is one. This historic museum was established back in 1891 and is great for its Tasmanian history, colonial art and more.

The other top museum in Launceston is the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania. This one is great for people who love anything to do with cars and is usually a hit with the children too, featuring over 100 years of the auto industry.

The Tamar Valley

Wine lovers may be familiar with the Tamar Valley as this is one of Australia’s top wine producing regions. You can follow the Tamar Valley Wineroute for both great scenery and great wine, heading out northwest from Launceston. There are over 20 vineyards in the Tamar Valley.

River Cruises on the Tamar

Another way to see the Tamar Valley is from the river itself. Several different tour companies offer a selection of river cruises leaving from Launceston; a trip that’s highly recommended on a beautiful sunny day!

When Should You Visit Launceston?

There’s a temperate climate here, as with most of Tasmania, giving the city four seasons and mild weather. Summer is the most popular time to visit with average high temperatures ranging between 22 and 24C from December to March. Spring and autumn are pleasant and though the winter is mild it is the wetter time of year (May to September).
