Bahrain, formerly called the Kingdom of Bahrain, is a small archipelagic island nation in the Persian Gulf. It is situated to the east of Saudi Arabia and to the north of Qatar.

Bahrain has one international airport in the capital city of Manama. Flights to Bahrain International Airport (airport code: BAH) are direct or with one or two stops. Direct flights from the UK are offered by airlines such as BMI or British Airways. Indirect flights to Bahrain are offered by numerous airlines with various routes. One or two stop flights from the UK to Bahrain are available by airlines such as Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Etihad Airways, KLM, United Airlines, Emirates, and Virgin Atlantic Airways.

The Tourist Attractions of Bahrain

The benefit with Bahrain is that although this is an Arab country with a mostly Muslim population it is far more liberal here than some of its neighbours. This gives visitors the chance to experience an Arabian lifestyle without having to sacrifice some of the things we would usually take for granted whilst on holiday, such as alcohol.

Manama

The capital and largest city of Bahrain is Manama. This is the gateway for the majority of international visitors to Bahrain and the city is worthy of your attention for several days at least.

Manama is quite a cosmopolitan city, though the Islamic culture is not difficult to miss. Mosques like Al-Fateh Mosque dominate the skyline, though the famous Pearl Monument is very modern. Other places to visit include the Bahrain National Museum and the seaside area of Corniche al-Fateh.

Because Bahrain is more liberal Manama in particular is a popular place for Saudi’s to come and enjoy entertainment and nightlife not found in Saudi Arabia. Of course, tourists can also enjoy this side of the city and you’ll find a large variety of places on offer, from the Hard Rock Café to several mock British pubs!

Manama, and Bahrain in general, is also a good and relatively cheap destination for shopping. The Manama Souq is a must-see for tourists as you’ll find everything under the sun here, though if you don’t like the bargaining and the marketplace feel there are also several malls here too.

Other Attractions in Bahrain

One of Bahrain’s biggest attractions in terms of the high number of visitors it attracts is the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix, held at the Bahrain International Circuit. If you’re planning to visit Bahrain for this (usually) annual event you will need to book your flights and hotel accommodation well in advance.

Bahrain also has a great deal of history. Bahrain has been home to civilisations for over 5000 years though there have been inhabitants here for 9000 years. There are several archaeological sites worth visiting in Bahrain, the most notable of which is the UNESCO World Heritage listed Qal’at al-Bahrain. This is an artificial mound which has been created after years and years of human occupation. It was once the home and capital of the Dilmun civilisation, though more recently a Portuguese fort was built on top of the mound and can still be seen there now.

When Should You Visit Bahrain?

Bahrain is a warm to hot country which often has high humidity levels and can suffer from high levels of dust brought over in the winds from Saudi Arabia. These are most noticeable in June and July plus these months can be unbearably hot for some visitors. The average high in July is 38C and the average low is 30C, meaning evenings won’t give you much respite from the heat! Winter and spring are probably the better times to visit as the temperatures aren’t so high. Most of Bahrain’s rainfall is in the winter though the amounts are so minimal that this shouldn’t cause problems!
