Shiraz Tourist Attractions
Shiraz is full of beautiful tombs, parks and other stunning architecture. Amongst the city’s highlights are the following:
Hafez Tomb
Hafez was born in and lived in Shiraz all his life. He was one of the greatest Persian lyric poets and is still held very highly by Iranians and especially Shirazis. Hafez lived from 1315 to 1390, and although there have been memorials built here in the past the current pavilion over the tomb of Hafez, and the memorial hall, was built in 1935.
Saadi Tomb
Another major Persian poet was Sa’di, also a native of Shiraz. He was born in 1184 and as well as his poetic abilities he was known for his deep social thoughts. His mausoleum is an attractive building with tall columns of pink marble and though it dates to much earlier times the current incarnation dates mostly from a major rebuild that took place in 1952.
Qur’an Gate
There is plenty of beautiful architecture to be seen in Shiraz and the Qur’an Gate is a fine example. This historic gate is at the northeastern entrance to the city and has been the victim of much damage over the thousand or so years since it was first built. What you see here now was restored in 1949. The gate now stands within an area of park which is a popular place for both locals and visitors to the city. Also within the park is the tomb of another famous poet, Khajooyeh Kermanee, and wonderful views of Shiraz can be seen if you walk up the stone stairways from the gate.
Pars Museum of Shiraz
The Pars Museum of Shiraz is noted both for its exhibits and for the building itself. The building is octagonal in shape and during the Zand dynasty of Iran, royal guests were hosted here. Karim Khan Zand, ruler of Iran from 1760 to 1779 is buried here.
Mosques in Shiraz
There are many beautiful mosques in Shiraz too of which the oldest, and one of the oldest in Iran as a whole, is Atigh Jame’ Mosque, built in the 9th century. Other notable mosques include the late 19th century Nasir al-Mulk Mosque, and the Zand period Vakil Mosque.
Shiraz’ Bazaars
Shiraz is home to numerous bazaars and at least one of these is a must visit attraction when here in the city. The ancient Vakil Bazaar, next to the Vakil Mosque, is highly recommended though there are several others as well where you can buy anything and everything.
When Should You Visit Shiraz?
Shiraz is a relatively dry city, receiving next to no rainfall during the summer months, which is also the hottest time. July is the hottest month with average highs of 37C (100F), though June and August are only a degree or two lower so this may be too hot for some visitors. Spring and autumn have warm temperatures and winters are cool.
