The Tourist Attractions of Tehran
Tehran is a large and busy city though when seen from a distance against the backdrop of the Alborz Mountain range the city almost seems small and dwarfed by these huge mountains! What the mountains provide is excellent skiing for the residents of and visitors to Tehran in the winter and views and scenery in the summer.
Milad Tower
Start your visit to Tehran in the Milad Tower. You cannot miss the huge tower, which is the 4th tallest tower in the world. The tower is part of a complex which includes a hotel, conference centre and more, and of course it offers spectacular views from the top floors where there are also restaurants. The tower stands 435 metres (1,427 feet) from the base to the antenna tip.
Museums in Tehran
Tehran has a good selection of museums. The National Museum of Iran informs visitors of the country’s history and features exhibits of items dating right back to the 5th century BC. Other museums include the Darabad Museum of Natural History, the Time Museum and the Money Museum. Tehran also offers several art museums, amongst which is the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art where you can see works from famous artists including Andy Warhol, Van Gogh and Picasso.
Palaces in Tehran
Tehran has several palaces to wow visitors with, including the Niavaran Palace Complex, Sadabad Palace and Golestan Palace. Golestan Palace is the oldest of the historic monuments in Tehran and was the former royal Qajar complex. The palace which you se here today was rebuilt in 1865 although unfortunately many of the palace buildings were destroyed in the first half of the 20th century as it was believed they should be destroyed to make way for new and modern buildings.
Sadabad Palace currently contains several of Tehran’s museums and was once lived in by the Qajar monarchs and later the royal family. The Niavaran Palace Complex contains a museum and several buildings. It is far more modern than Golestan as the main palace building was completed in 1968 and was the main residence for the last Shah.
When Should You Visit Tehran?
Tehran definitely has a climate of four seasons and its weather is dominated by the mountains on one side of the city and the desert on the other. Summers are hot and dry with the hottest month being July when there’s an average high temperature of 37C and low of 24C. If this seems a little hot, try visiting Tehran in the spring or autumn when temperatures are milder and more pleasant. Winters are cool though not too cold, and rainfall is minimal throughout the year.
