Haifa Tourist Attractions
Despite its status as an ancient city, most of Haifa today is modern and new though this does include a good variety of attractions that make this an interesting place to visit for international tourists.
Baha’i World Centre
The Baha’i World Centre is Haifa’s main tourist attraction. It serves as the spiritual and administrative centre of the Baha’i Faith and is a beautiful complex with immaculately landscaped gardens. Most of the centre was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2008, including the beautiful Shrine of the Bab with its golden domed roof. The shrine is considered to be the second holiest place on earth for members of the Baha’i Faith. The terraced gardens that make their way up the slopes of Mount Carmen from the shrine are stunning and offer fabulous views over Haifa.
German Colony
The German Colony was established in Haifa in 1868 by German Templers and at that time it was a rural area far outside the city centre. In recent years many of the old German Colony homes and buildings have been restored and this part of Haifa has become one of the city’s top tourist attractions. It has attractive shops, coffee shops and restaurants to enjoy.
Stella Maris and the Cave of Elijah
Stella Maris is an old monastery that was completed in 1836 by the French Carmelites and it’s situated on the slopes of Mount Carmel. From the top of Mount Carmel there is a hiking trail that connects the monastery to the Cave of Elijah, a prophet both for Islam and Judaism.
Haifa Museums
Haifa has many museums including the popular Israel National Museum of Science, Technology and Space which is housed within one of the city’s historic buildings. The Haifa Museum is located within the Germany Colony part of the city and it includes the Museum of Ancient Art and the Museum of Modern Art. You can also visit museums focusing on other aspects of life and culture in Haifa, including the Israel Railway Museum, the Clandestine Immigration and Navy Museum, and the Israeli Oil Industry Museum.
