Destinations in Israel
Israel is a country located in Western Asia and is on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. The West Bank and Gaza Strip, which are known as problematic areas are next door. The majority of the population are Jewish and therefore many who visit the country may have religious reasons, for the architecture and sacred sites. Although there are always safe places to visit in Israel, you should always exercise caution as the area is not completely peaceful at the moment, since Israel has been in conflict with its neighbouring Arab countries. Don’t let this put you off; be safe, go on guided tours and visit this mystical land.
Flights
Israel is not a hugely popular tourist destination from the UK although here are plenty of airlines that will fly you there. You can fly from major UK destinations such as Heathrow, Nottingham, Manchester and Gatwick and it is always worth booking early for the best prices. Airlines that go to the country include Delta, Continental Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa, Iberia Flights, Turkish airlines, British Airways KLM, BMI, Rossiya Airlines, Cyprus Air, Thai Airways, JetairFly, thompsonfly, Royal Jordian Flights and more. The two major cities you can fly to include Tel Aviv, the capital and Tel Aviv Yafo Sde Dov.
Climate
The temperatures in Israel vary greatly, especially during the winter months when it can be rainy or snowy. In fact there is usually at least one snowy period in Israel once a year. Costal cites which include Haifa and Tel Aviv have more of a sunny, Mediterranean climate. One of the highest temperatures recoded was in 1942 when the temperature reached 53.7 degrees centigrade in Tirat Zvi in the Jordan Valley – luckily this hasn’t happened since! From May to September there is little rain so various techniques have been introduced to make sure the local people have enough water. In Jerusalem the summer is normally around 24 degrees centigrade and in Tel Aviv, the temperature is around the same although July and August are the busiest tourist months due to the weather.
What to do
Of course there is lots of stunning Israeli architecture to see such as the Cave of Machpelath, where Abraham buried his wife Sarah; the Cenacle and the Tomb of David, the Temple Mount Haram ashShari where Abraham almost sacrificed his son Isaac and the Western Wall, which is very sacred to the Jewish people.
Don’t forget to visit the Dead Sea – is it’s a stunning beach to visit and there are the world famous Dead Sea Spas which are full of salt baths, Mineral baths, mudpacks and massage treatments.
When it comes to museums and galleries visit the Israel Museum n Jerusalem, which has collections from the prehistoric to the modern day; there is also the Biblical Zoo and Miniature Israel, which you can get to by train – miniature Israel has a legoland sized reconstruction of the country which is a hit with children.
