Tel Aviv is Israel’s second largest city and it’s situated on the Mediterranean coast in the west of the country. This cosmopolitan city has plenty to offer with its mix of beaches and culture, and a lively atmosphere.

Flights to Tel Aviv land in Israel’s main Ben Gurion International Airport (airport code: TLV), about 9 miles from Tel Aviv. There are several options for travel into Tel Aviv’s centre from the airport, usually taking around 20 minutes, by train, taxi or shared taxi, plus there is an airport shuttle bus. Tel Aviv Tourist Attractions

The Port of Yafo

The city of Tel Aviv has also include Yafo (or Jaffa as it’s also known) since the two merged in 1950. This part of the city is now one of Tel Aviv’s most popular tourist destinations, offering both history and a more modern twist. The port itself is one of the oldest in the world and at one time it was the largest in Israel. Now the area around the port, which is called Old Jaffa, has benefited from redevelopment and offers a varied number of attractions for visitors.

The Zodiac Alleys are particularly popular as they feature small art galleries and eclectic shops throughout the maze-like network of alleys. To pick up bargain goods though the flea market and bazaar are a better bet. Other attractions in Old Jaffa include the Wishing Bridge and Ramesses Gate, plus an assortment of old buildings like the Franciscan Church, and St Peter’s Catholic Church.

Tel Aviv Museums

Like any major city Tel Aviv has many museums though it’s said to be the city with the largest number of museums per capita in the world! You could spend your entire holiday wandering in and out of Tel Aviv’s museums so if you want to restrict yourself head for the top three which are also three of the largest in Israel: Eretz Israel Museum, Tel Aviv Museum of Art and Batey Haosef Museum. Of these three the Eretz Israel Museum is especially recommended because it has some excellent history exhibits and a great archaeology collection.

Tel Aviv Beachfront

Tel Aviv isn’t just about serious sightseeing as this city on the Mediterranean also has some great beaches! If you’re staying in Tel Aviv for a few nights or more you can choose a beachfront hotel and make the most of the warm weather, bars, restaurants and nightclubs that line the beachfront.

Speaking of nightlife, Tel Aviv is a very lively city that has a vibrant nightlife scene, whether or not you’re staying on the beachfront.

Shopping in Tel Aviv

Shopping is a popular pastime in Tel Aviv for both locals and visitors to the city and there are many different places to shop here. Modern shopping malls are one option, and there are many to choose from as Tel Aviv has the highest ratio of shopping malls per square mile per capita in the world! There are also flea markets like the one mentioned above, and shopping streets.

When Should You Visit Tel Aviv?

Tel Aviv has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers, and mild but wet winters. August is the hottest month when the average high is 30C (86F), perfect for the beach! Though winters are fairly mild the rainfall may put you off sightseeing – January is the coolest and the wettest month of the year.
