Situated in the far south of Jordan is the city of Aqaba. This is Jordan’s only seaport and as such it’s located on the Gulf of Aqaba; a stretch of water that leads into the Red Sea, so it’s an important city for Jordan. For tourism, Aqaba is increasing in popularity as a destination for diving and as a beach resort.

Flights to Aqaba

The King Hussein International Airport (airport code: AQJ) is about 20 minutes away from the city of Aqaba. There are flights to Aqaba with a single transfer from the UK, with British Airways and Royal Jordanian. Both routes stop in Amman. Flights to Aqaba with 2 connections are available with British Midland, stopping in Abu Dhabi and Amman. Alternatively, Turkish Airlines offers a route with connections first in Istanbul and then Amman.

Aqaba Tourist Attractions

Diving and Beach Holidays

Aqaba is first and foremost a destination for a great beach or diving holiday, rivalling some of the Red Sea’s other top diving destinations. The city has a good selection of hotels ranging from budget level to high end luxury hotels and resorts which have everything you need for a fun and/or relaxing holiday.

The beaches are nice and sandy, and are generally kept very clean, and as well as diving there are all sorts of other water sports on offer in Aqaba such as windsurfing. When you want to spend a day away from the beach, Aqaba also offer several other things to do, such as making the most of the surrounding desert on a desert expedition!

Aqaba Fort

To experience some of the history and culture of Aqaba there’s the Aqaba Fort. This historic fort originally dated back to the 14th century but the present ruins date from a re-build that took place in the 1500s.

Another historic attraction is the Turkish Baths in Aqaba. Built in 306AD these Turkish baths are still operating to this day and are a great place to come and relax after a day of activities.

Petra and Wadi Rum

It’s also useful to know that both Petra and Wadi Rum are within a day trip of Aqaba, and a visit to Petra in particular is highly recommended. You can get a public bus to either of these places though the journey will take several hours. The other option is to rent a car or make use of one of the many tour companies who will offer guided tours – perhaps even your hotel could arrange the trip.

When Should You Visit Aqaba?

Aqaba has a desert climate so the city is very hot all year round and without much rainfall. Summertime temperatures may be just too hot for some visitors – the average high in July and August is nearly 40C and nighttimes don’t give too much respite from the heat, dropping to an average low of around 26C. The winter sees more pleasant temperatures; January is the coolest month when the average high is around 21C. This is a good temperature for sightseeing but not as good for swimming and diving; perhaps then spring and autumn would be the best times to visit Aqaba.
