For many tourists around the world the mention of Kuwait conjures thoughts of war and invasions by neighbouring Iraq, though in actual fact Kuwait is far beyond this period. This is a stable country and although it doesn’t have a multitude of tourist attractions there is enough here for an interesting and varied holiday.

Kuwait is served by one airport, Kuwait International Airport (airport code: KWI), in Kuwait City. A variety of major world airlines offer travellers direct and indirect flights to Kuwait from the UK. British Airways and Kuwait Airways provide direct flights to Kuwait from the UK. Other airlines such as Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Egyptair, Emirates, Etihad Airways, and MEA all offer travellers one stop flights to Kuwait from the UK.

The Tourist Attractions of Kuwait

Kuwait is an Arab emirate and has Arabic as its official language, but due to its history a lot of people also speak and understand English. Kuwait was a British protectorate from the early 20th century until 1961, and since this time the country’s economy has really begun to take off with the development of Kuwait’s oil fields. Originally Kuwait was a pearling country in the 18th century, but the plentiful supply of pearls grew thin.

Now Kuwait doesn’t exactly have a thriving tourism industry, but it is on the up. Most of the country’s attractions are found in the capital, Kuwait City, and even though this is an Arab country visitors will find it is quite cosmopolitan in comparison to some of its Arab neighbours.

Kuwait City

Kuwait City is the capital and largest city in Kuwait. It’s best known for the odd looking Kuwait Towers, the city’s most prominent landmark. There are three towers altogether – one of the larger ones is actually a water tower and not accessible to the public, though the main one has a large Viewing Sphere and there’s also a restaurant.

For a different view of Kuwait City, visitors can also try the observation deck of the Liberation Tower, or enjoy a meal in the tower’s revolving restaurant.

Being such a cosmopolitan city, Kuwait City has a good variety of restaurants and modern shopping malls. Its museums are also a major attraction, and these include the National Museum and the Science and Natural History Museum. Seif Palace and the Grand Mosque are other popular landmarks.

The Kuwait Coastline

Situated at the top of the Persian Gulf, Kuwait has an appealing coastline. Tourists can stay in one of the many beachside hotels and resorts and participate in one of the country’s favourite pastimes, water sports. Powerboating is extremely popular here, or for a slower pace you can try sailing or maybe scuba diving.

The trip to Failaka Island is popular with many visitors too. This contains a Greek archaeological site and evidence of Bronze Age settlement, and is reached via a regular ferry service.

When Should You Visit Kuwait?

Kuwait’s dry and desert-like scenery is thanks to its arid continental climate and little rain. Summers are long and hot, lasting from May to September, when temperatures often reach the mid 40’s C (113F). From March through to August there’s also the chance of severe dust storms, though these dust storms can blow across the country at any time of the year. In comparison to the hot summer temperatures, winter (from November to February) is actually quite cool.
