Kuwait City is the capital and largest city of the Middle Eastern country of Kuwait. Situated on the Persian Gulf, Kuwait City is surprisingly cosmopolitan and modern, and would serve as a good introduction to Arabia for many tourists.

International flights to Kuwait City land in the Kuwait International Airport (airport code: KWI). Travellers can choose from direct or indirect flights to Kuwait from the UK, offered by numerous major world airlines. Kuwait Airways and British Airways offer travellers the comfort of a direct flight to Kuwait from the UK, whereas airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Egyptair, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Etihad Airways, and MEA provide flights to Kuwait from the UK with one connection.

Kuwait City Tourist Attractions

Although quite a large city in terms of area, Kuwait City is far less populated than many other of the world’s cities. The actual City has a population of less than 100,000, whilst the Metro area has a population of around 2.4 million people.

Many tourists may still think of Kuwait City as the city which suffered much damage when Iraq invaded in 1990, and though the city did suffer a lot of damage it is very much back on its feet again now, and is generally a safe place to visit. Kuwait City has a booming economy now and tourism is becoming more and more popular. You’ll find there is a very good selection of international and world class hotels here for example.

The Kuwait Towers

Many visitors begin their stay in Kuwait City at the city’s most famous landmarks, the Kuwait Towers. These three towers were built in 1979 and survived the Iraqi invasion of the city, though not entirely unscathed. The largest tower features two spheres, the higher up of which is the popular Viewing Sphere which has a rotating platform. Below this is the restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, though apparently breakfast is for ladies only!

The smaller tower with a sphere is not accessible to the public as this is actually a water tower, whilst the third ‘spike’ has no sphere at all and is basically there to service the other two towers.

Liberation Tower

Whilst the Kuwait Towers are the most popular attraction in Kuwait City they are not the tallest. The Liberation Tower gives different views from higher up. There is a rotating observation deck and restaurant at a height of 150 metres (492 feet) on this tower, which is actually one of the tallest telecommunication towers in the world.

Kuwait City Museums

Kuwait City’s best museum was severely damaged and looted by the Iraqis during the war, though the National Museum has benefited from renovation and re-stocking and is now open to the public again.

Other museums in Kuwait City include the Science and Natural History Museum, and Sadu House. Sadu House is an interesting building and is open as a cultural museum of the Bedouin society.

Seif Palace and the Grand Mosque

Seif Palace was built in 1896 and has amongst other things a beautiful interior with Islamic mosaic tiles. As with many of Kuwait City’s best buildings, the palace was damaged when Iraq took over the city, though it remains impressive.

Just opposite Seif Palace is the Grand Mosque. This is the largest mosque in the whole of Kuwait and can hold 10,000 men in the Main Prayer Hall, plus 950 women in a separate chamber. It was built between 1979 and 1986.

When Should You Visit Kuwait City?

As with the rest of Kuwait, Kuwait City has a dry climate classified as being arid continental. The long summers are hot and dry, often reaching the mid 40’s C (113F), and lasting from May to September.
