Situated in the Middle East, Lebanon is a small country at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea where it borders with Syria and Israel. Political unrest could mean that some parts of Lebanon are not safe for tourists to visit at this time, so check with the Foreign office before making plans. However, the situation has been improving recently and hence Lebanon should not be discounted as it offers a variety of interesting attractions.

International flights to Lebanon are welcomed in the Beirut International Airport (airport code: BEY), which is located 3 miles south of Beirut’s city centre. Flights to Lebanon from the UK are direct and indirect and available through numerous major world airlines. Choose from airlines such as BMI, MEA and British Airways which offer direct flights to Lebanon from the UK. Other airlines such as Egyptair, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, Turkish Airlines, Etihad, Emirates, and Air Algerie provide indirect flights to Lebanon from the UK.

The Tourist Attractions of Lebanon

Lebanon is back on its way to becoming a popular tourist destination. Although only a small country there is a good variety of things to see and do here, from beach holidays on the Med to ancient World Heritage Sites.

Beirut

Beirut may not sound like the most appealing city to visit for a holiday, though in fact it really is quite attractive, albeit busy, with nearly half of the country’s population living here. Beirut has several popular landmarks such as the Martyr’s Statue and the Solidere Clock Tower. Amongst the various museums are the Sursock Museum. This is set within an 18th century Lebanese palace and displays international art. The National Museum of Beirut is also worth visiting.

Beirut makes a good base for a holiday because the city is near beaches, and its beachside areas are full of restaurants and places to stay.

Jeita Grotto

For a short trip out of Beirut there is the Jeita Grotto, about 12.5 miles from the city. This is a group of two caves which have been formed by water erosion on the limestone rocks. Here you can see some of the world’s longest stalactites and stalagmites, as one is 8.2 metres long.

Baalbek Roman Ruins

Further away from Beirut though still accessible for a day trip is the Baalbek Roman Ruins, about 50 miles north east of the capital city. These are the most impressive ruins in Lebanon and in Roman times the town was called Heilopolis. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features large temples, tall columns and more, of which the Temple of Bacchus is the best renowned. Not only is this the most impressive at Baalbek but it is amongst the best preserved Roman ruins in the world.

Qadisha Valley

Another of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Lebanon is the Qadisha Valley. Qadisha means Holy, and this has been the home to Christian monastic communities for centuries. The valley is a deep gorge lined with caves plus monasteries and chapels.

When Should You Visit Lebanon?

On the coast especially, Lebanon has a Mediterranean climate with summers that are hot and dry and winters that are mild and wet. However its inland mountainous regions will have colder winters with snowfall being common.
