The Tourist Attractions of Oman

Whilst Oman may not feature some of the world’s best known attractions this Arabian country does actually have a lot to offer. Its position at the edge of the Arabian Peninsula, where it borders with Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen, makes Oman attractive for its coasts and beaches, though Oman in fact has plenty more than this on offer.

Muscat

As the major entry point for flights to Oman, the capital and largest city, Muscat, is a good base for your visit to the country. A good variety of attractions include the world’s third largest mosque, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, while other impressive buildings include the Qasr Al Alam Royal Palace. Historic forts can be found in many parts of Oman, but here in Muscat are two of the popular ones – Al Jalali Fort and Mirani Fort. These were both built originally for use as prisons in 1580 and have now been preserved as museums. Another museum to visit in Muscat is the Bait az-Zubair Museum.

Many visitors enjoying shopping in Muscat because of the great variety of places you can go shopping. The souqs are particularly popular. These traditional Arabian markets are full of atmosphere and a multitude of goods being sold. If you’re looking for something in particular, the chances are you will find it here, somewhere! If the souqs are a little claustrophobic, the modern shopping malls offer a great contrast.

Bahla Fort

As mentioned, Oman has many historic forts to visit, and if the two in Muscat have whet your appetite the Bahla Fort is definitely one to visit too. Although the fort had fallen into disrepair it has now been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and since 1987 is being restored. This impressive fort was originally built in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Beaches of Oman

With a lengthy coastline on both the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman, Oman has many excellent beaches and beachside resorts, particularly popular around the Muscat section of coast. Enjoying the beaches is just one part of the experience, as water sports are also very popular here, plus diving and snorkelling.

Ras al Hadd beach is well known for its nesting turtles and you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins swimming just off the coast too.

When Should You Visit Oman?

Oman’s climate is hot and dry, and with the extreme temperatures experienced here some visitors will find that the summer is just too hot. The hottest temperatures can last from May through to October when daytime highs often reach 54C (129F).
