Muscat is both the capital and the largest city of Oman, in the Middle East. The city is situated on the northern coast of Oman, on the Gulf of Oman and is an attractive and interesting destination for visitors to the country.

This is situated about 19 miles (30km) outside of Old Muscat. From the UK flights to Muscat are available with various airlines providing direct or indirect flights. British Airways and Oman Aviation are among the airlines providing direct flights to Oman from the UK. Other airlines include Lufthansa, Etihad, Royal Jordanian, Emirates, Jet Airways, and Qatar Airways, who all provide travellers with indirect flights to Oman from the UK.

Muscat Tourist Attractions

Muscat is an attractive city, fairly typical of what many visitors expect to find in the Middle East – mosques, forts, palaces, markets, and museums, though the city offers even more than this in the form of water sports, beaches, trekking, rock climbing and more, proving that Muscat is actually quite a cosmopolitan city in many respects.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

The third largest mosque in the world is situated here in Muscat. Non-Muslims are allowed to enter certain parts of the mosque during the mornings, but not on Fridays. Inside there are numerous things to see including the second largest Persian carpet in the world!

Al Jalali Fort and Al Mirani Fort

Built in 1580 by the Portuguese these two forts are set into the mountainside and were constructed to use as prisons. Now both are interesting museums.

Qasr Al Alam Royal Palace

The official palace of the ruler of Oman, Sultan Qaboos lives in the Royal Palace that is set in between the two forts (mentioned above). Unfortunately this impressive structure is not open to visitors but you are allowe to take photographs of it from the entrance gates.

Mutrag Souk

Old Muscat’s marketplace, the souk, is a must visit for tourists who want to experience an important piece of Middle Eastern culture. The Mutrag Souk is maze-like with its little alleyways and plethora of shops selling anything and everything. If you think you’ve seen one marketplace so you’ve seen them all, still consider visiting this one as its said to be the best in the region.

Museums in Muscat

In addition to the museums in the two forts, there are also several others that maybe of interest. These include several national museums such as the imaginatively named National Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Omani Museum.

Activities in Muscat

As well as sightseeing, Muscat is also a great place to enjoy the water, with sports like scuba diving being popular. On dry land you can participate in trekking, or watch sports like camel racing!

When Should You Visit Muscat?

Muscat has a very hot and dry climate, especially during the summer months when temperatures will no doubt be too hot for many visitors. June is the hottest month with an average high of 40C (104F) and no rainfall at all. From April through to October expect temperatures in the mid to high 30’s (low to high 90’s F). Winters are cooler but still warm to hot, and the city has a certain amount of rainfall during this time. March is by far the wettest month.
