Doha is the capital city of Qatar, on the coast of the Persian Gulf. It's on the eastern side of the country, not far from the second largest city of Rayyan. Doha is a busy and modern city, popular with business travellers, and although it offers great weather, beaches, diving and more there are not many other tourist attractions.

Doha Tourist Attractions

National Museum and Aquarium

Housed in a restored palace of Islamic architecture, the national museum has exhibits that illustrate the long history and traditional culture of Qatar. You can also see displays of local plants and animals, and desert geology. The aquarium displays are separate from the museum, on the other side of a large lagoon.

Doha Zoo

The zoo is on Salwa Road, about 12 miles (20km) from the city centre. The enclosures are not the same as the natural habitats found in Western zoos, but they do have a sizable collection of animals to see. All the zoo favourites can be found, like the elephant, giraffes, monkeys and many local bird species. The rare oryx is also on prominent display, as Qatar's national animal. There is also a small playground and picnic area. Certain days are only for men and boys, and other days there are no men allowed. Check their schedule before making the trip to the zoo.

Aladdin's Kingdom

Aladdin's Kingdom is the only theme park in the Persian Gulf region, and it is fairly small compared to other major parks around the world. Rides include a roller coaster, ferris wheel, carousel and several others. Snacks are plentiful on the midway. The park is within the north end of the city, and, like the zoo, some days are designated for women and families only.

The Standing Souk (Souq Waqif)

Do some shopping and get a taste of Doha culture at the large souk, or open-air marketplace. It was originally a Bedouin market, but has undergone renovation so that it now provides a mix of modern and ancient architecture. It's loud and busy, and you should expect to haggle over the prices for everything. There are stalls for clothing , fabric, baskets, spices, fresh fruit and curios.

Watersports

Since the city is on the Gulf coast, there are plenty of places to get out on the water. Kite surfing is very popular with tourists, or you can take a boat cruise in a traditional dhow. There are several places to go scuba diving or snorkelling too.

When Should You Visit Doha?

Unless you enjoy the heat, the winter months of December, January and February are the best times to visit. The temperatures will average 18C (64F) during the day during those months. On the other hand, July and August can reach 40C (105F). Rain is generally not a problem.
