Riyadh is the capital and largest city in Saudi Arabia, in the Middle East. This bustling city is home to some of the world’s most spectacular modern architecture, but offers visitors a good selection of history too.

Flights to Riyadh

Flights to Riyadh arrive at the large and modern King Khaled Airport (airport code: RUH), which is about 22 miles (35km) outside the city. Be aware that there are only taxi services to get you between the city and the airport. Only British Midland has a non-stop route that takes about six and a half hours from London. All other carriers have flights to Riyadh with one transfer. Lufthansa transfers in Frankfurt, Egyptair in Cairo and British Airways makes its connection in Damascus.

Riyadh Tourist Attractions

Despite being the largest city and the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh really isn’t hailed as a tourist destination, attracting more business tourists than those coming for leisure. There are several reasons for this, mostly all harking back to the fact that this is a staunch Muslim city. There is very little in the way of entertainment and there are fairly strict rules and customs that visitors should respect. It’s these reasons that will often put off tourists from coming here. If you can live with the restrictions though, Riyadh does have a number of attractions to offer you. Here are just a few…

The Kingdom Centre

Without a doubt this is the most striking piece of modern architecture in Riyadh and a must visit for any tourists to the city. It’s the tallest building in the city and in fact in the whole of Saudi Arabia, standing 305 metres high, and you can make the most of the views from the Skybridge. The Skybridge connects the two halves of the building, way up at 300 metres high, on the 99th floor. Although you’ll be treated to great city views at any time of the day, many visitors say the best time to come up here is at dusk as the light begins to fade and the lights of Riyadh shine beneath you.

Masmak Fortress

The good thing about visiting Riyadh is that there’s historical as well as modern here, and Masmak Fortress is a fine example of the historic. Renovated in 2008 this building now looks like it was built yesterday, but still has the historic feel.

Murabba Palace

Another historic piece of architecture is Murabba Palace, built by King Abdul Aziz after he successfully conquered Masmak Fortress. Wander inside this daunting building and you’ll be treated to all sorts of interesting sights!

The National Museum of Saudi Arabia

The large National Museum is welcoming of foreigners with the majority of exhibits displaying English translations. There’s plenty to see and do here and the museum makes use of the latest technology, and provided you can look past the obvious and frequent references to the Quran, it makes an interesting visit.

Shopping in Riyadh

Riyadh is a great place to visit if you love shopping. There are countless shopping malls here with hundreds of shops in each one, so you’re bound to find what you’re looking for. Also take time to visit the more traditional form of shopping malls, the souqs, and see how shopping used to be done!

When Should You Visit Riyadh?

Riyadh has a very hot and arid climate, remaining mild throughout the year. Summers really are too hot for most visitors, with average highs of 43.5C (110F) in the hottest month, July. From April through to October average highs are always above 30C (87F) so you may find it better to visit in the winter when temperatures are still warm and pleasant.
