Flights to Yanbu
Places in Saudi Arabia
Officially called Yanbu’ al Bahr, meaning ‘spring by the sea’, this Saudi Arabian city is more commonly simply called Yanbu though it also goes by the names of Yambo or Yenbo. Yanbu is located on the Red Sea and it’s a major seaport that has a high population of expatriates fro Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Flights to Yanbu
The Yanbu Airport (airport code: YNB) is a domestic airport, only served by Saudi Arabian Airlines for local flights to Yanbu. For flights to Yanbu from London, it’s actually easiest to book a flight to Jeddah, and then get a separate ticket to Yanbu. In Jeddah, the airport is the King Abdulaziz International Airport (code: JED). All flights from London have 1 connection. The transfer cities vary by airline; British Airways and Egyptair for example both stop in Cairo, Turkish Airlines transfers in Istanbul and British Midland stops in Bahrain. There is also a good highway connecting Yanbu and Jeddah, for other travel options.
Yanbu Tourist Attractions
Yanbu has a history going back 2500 years when it was a stopping off point on the ancient spice and incense routes that ran from Yemen through to Egypt and the Mediterranean. Despite this importance, Yanbu actually remained a relatively small town right up until 1975 when it was chosen as a new industrial centre for Saudi Arabia by the government of the country. The town expanded rapidly and it still even growing today as more people move here and more industrial, homes and businesses are being built.
With industry driving the expansion of Yanbu this isn’t really a major tourist destination, however, there’s still an old town here to see if you’re visiting the city or the region anyway, plus some opportunities for diving if you’re into scuba diving, otherwise Yanbu probably wouldn’t be on your list of holiday destinations.
Yanbu consists of three ‘villages’ – the older parts of the town where there are mostly farms is called The Palms; the newer city which is now the heart of Yanbu in general, called Al-Balad; and the industrial parts of Yanbu where the industry and new housing developments were constructed from 1975 onwards.
Scuba divers may be interested in visiting Yanbu as there’s a virtually untouched coral reef that naturally protects both sides of the harbour. With little in the way of diving going on here it’s a great opportunity to see and experience these coral reefs while they are still in a relatively untouched condition.
When Should You Visit Yanbu?
Yanbu has an arid climate like much of Saudi Arabia so there’s little in the way of rainfall throughout the year, usually falling in winter when it does. During the summer temperatures can get very hot, reaching into the 40’s C, which can be a little too hot for some visitors. Winters are not nearly as hot as in Jeddah, further down the coast, but it’s still mild with temperatures above 10C most of the time. Spring or autumn would therefore be the best time to visit for many tourists when temperatures are not quite as hot.
