Flights to Syria

In Syria, there are 3 international airports though only 2 of them handle air traffic from the UK or Europe. The main airport is the Damascus International Airport (airport code: DAM) located outside the capital city, Damascus. The other is Aleppo International Airport (ALP) near the northern city of Aleppo. Most flights to Syria will require at least one connection, except for British Midland who do offer a direct flight to Syria from Heathrow Airport. For non-direct flights, options include EgyptAir, Turkish Airlines, and Air France which all have single connections in Cairo, Istanbul or Paris respectively. Flights through Moscow are also available on Aeroflot.

Syria Tourist Attractions

Damascus

The capital and largest city of Syria is Damascus. This ancient city is a very good find for tourists interested in ancient history as it is actually the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, having first been established somewhere between 8 and 10,000 years ago.

The old city is a great place to spend most of your time as it’s full of narrow streets and ruins from ancient civilisations. Look out for the numerous bits of Greek and Roman temples around the old city. The major attraction is the souq plus the Umayyad Mosque.

Other popular attractions in Syria’s capital city include the Citadel and the great views over the city from Mount Qasioun.

Palmyra

Meaning date palm, Palmyra is a city in the middle of the desert yet it grows an abundance of date palms in this great desert oasis. The city was first established by the Romans and has now become one of the to tourist attractions in Syria!

You can still see many of the Roman built arches and columns, plus you can visit an Arab built castle on top of a nearby hill.

Krak des Chevaliers

Krak des Chevaliers means Castle of the Knights and this is one of the best preserved Crusader Castles in the world. Understandably this is a very popular destination in Syria, made all the more popular by the fact that you are allowed to wander around the castle on your own. There are many darker spots though so if you have some kind of torch with you this will come in very handy!

Aleppo

The location of Syria’s other popular international airport and the second largest city in the country is Aleppo. The city is best known for the large Aleppo Citadel that stands up on a hill above the city. The citadel was built in the 13th century and is by far the city’s main attraction though visitors should also take time to visit its extensive souq and many mosques.

The Dead Cities

Despite the off-putting name the Dead Cities of Syria are another of the country’s top tourist attractions. These are cities that have long been abandoned by the Romans and early Christians who built them. Although they are abandoned they are still fascinating places to visit.

When Should You Visit Syria?

Syria may be suitable for visiting throughout the year depending on where in the country you’re heading to. Overall the weather is hot in the summer and warm during the winter. Rainfall can be quite scarce in inland areas but on the Med coast winters are wetter. Up in the mountains winters are cooler than the rest of the country and will receive occasional snowfall.
