Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates and is situated on the central western coast of the country. Abu Dhabi is actually on an island in the Persian Gulf and is a cosmopolitan though expensive city to visit.

Abu Dhabi Tourist Attractions

Abu Dhabi is definitely a modern city and is not for visitors looking for historical attractions. Its main landmarks are certainly impressive however and the sheer luxury and cost of Abu Dhabi’s buildings can’t fail to impress.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque

From the outside this huge mosque, which is the 6th largest in the world, cannot fail to impress and this continue through to the inside also. Non-Muslims can enter the mosque on any day except Friday (Holy day), and only until midday. Guided tours are offered at 10am.

Skyscrapers and Other Landmarks

Abu Dhabi has several towering buildings that will be over 1000 feet in height when completed, all as part of a master plan for the city. These are due to be completed between 2010 and 2011.

One of Abu Dhabi’s best known buildings, the Emirates Palace, has been open since 2005 and is reputed to be the most expensive hotel to ever be built. It has 302 rooms and 92 suites, ranging from a per night cost of around $400 to $11,500!

Abu Dhabi Corniche

The Corniche gives visitors a different atmosphere to many other parts of the city as the order of the day appears to be fun here! This is the waterfront zone and it stretches for several miles including the waterfront walkway. Along the stretch of this there are also sandy beaches and amusements such as go kart riding, playgrounds and often entertainment. The Corniche really comes alive at night when it’s a very popular spot for a walk, admiring the great views of downtown Abu Dhabi and its skyscrapers and lit up buildings.

Abu Dhabi Parks

Though there is plenty of construction and towering buildings in Abu Dhabi the city planners have still left plenty of room for parks and open green spaces. One of the best and mot popular parks is a multi-use park. Khalifa Park offers formal gardens as well as an aquarium, play areas, a museum, train and more.

Shopping in Abu Dhabi

Many tourists visit Abu Dhabi just for the shopping and with many modern and huge shopping malls on offer you have an excellent choice of shops available. The Marina Mall is one of the most popular but you can also visit the Abu Dhabi Mall, and Khalidiya Mall. Though Abu Dhabi itself is renowned for being expensive, shopping is competitive and it helps that there’s no tax to pay!

When Should You Visit Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi is hot and fairly dry all year round. The middle of summer may be just too hot for some, peaking at an average high of 39C (102F) in August. There’s no rainfall at all between May and October, then a little in the remaining months.
