The city of Al Ain is located within the emirate of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East. It’s the second largest city in the Abu Dhabi Emirate and the fourth largest in the country. Al Ain is known as the Garden City because compared to most other places in UAE it’s very green.

Al Ain Tourist Attractions
Al Ain may not be as well known as Abu Dhabi or Dubai but it does have a developing tourism industry. The climate makes this quite a welcoming city though there are less attractions here than in some other Middle Eastern cities.
Al Ain Museums
Al Ain does have several museums including the Al Ain National Museum and the Al Ain Palace Museum. At Al Ain Fort there is also a museum. The fort itself was built to protect this desert oasis from raiders while the museum now depicts what life was like in the region before the United Arab Emirates was founded.
Al Ain Oasis
Speaking of the oasis, there are several here in Al Ain. The largest is home to thousands of date palms that seem to defy the desert environment! You can walk or drive through the oasis.
Shopping in Al Ain
Like many places in UAE shopping is often high on the agenda for both locals and visiting tourists. You can shop the more traditional way in the main souq within the downtown area, or make use of three major shopping malls.
Another option if you’re in the market for buying a camel is the Camel Souq! Well you don’t actually have to be interested in buying any camels as this is a popular tourist attraction anyway. This large marketplace is near the border with Oman and is where hundreds of camels are brought every day to be sold. Usually the traders are very happy to let children be photographed on top of a camel so could be a fun place to bring your children.
Al Ain Zoo
Another family friendly attraction is the Al Ain Zoo. This is a good quality zoo with an interesting assortment of animals including the popular Big Cat House plus some Arabian breeds of antelope and oryx.
Jebel Hafeet Mountains
Al Ain Zoo sits in the foothills of the Jebel Hafeet Mountains which are themselves also a tourist attraction. This is the second highest mountain in UAE and is accessible via a winding road that takes you to the top where there are some spectacular views and a cafeteria where you can stop for a drink or bite to eat.
When Should You Visit Al Ain?
Despite the fact that Al Ain is situated in the desert it’s a popular summertime destination for Arabs from other cities because of its lower humidity levels. Temperatures are the highest in the country though so if you’re not used to extreme temperatures you may be better visiting during the slightly cooler times of year.
