The United Arab Emirates or the UAE is now one of the most popular tourist destinations for people from the UK in the Middle East. There is a direct contraction perhaps in the way the country is; on one hand great wealth and designer beaches, boutiques and flash holiday resorts are there for the tourists. On the other hand, it is still an Islamic country, meaning that it follows certain codes and traditions. As a tourist you will have to observe these beliefs too, such as prayer times, discretion if you are travelling and staying with a partner you are not married to, if you are gay etc. However, in the very touristy areas, there is more freedom allowed for western travellers and you can have fun, sunbathe and shop to your hearts content. November to April is the best time to visit the country as it is cooler yet pleasant. Also remember that Ramadan, generally September to October is observed in the UAE and there is no eating or drinking, or smoking in the public areas from sunrise to sunset.

Flights

Flights from the UK to the UAE are becoming more and more common and therefore more competitive. Dubai is one of the most popular tourist destinations for UK visitors so you will be able to find lots of flights. The main international airports are in Dubai and Abu Shabi although there are smaller airports in Ras a-Khaimah and Al-Ain. You can fly from major UK airports such as Manchester, Heathrow and Gatwick. Airlines that fly to the UAE from the UK include Emirates, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Olympic Airlines, Gulf Air, Delta, Air France, Cathay Pacific, Jet Airways, Lufthansa and more. As Dubai becomes more popular the prices will become more competitive too but always book in advance for the best prices. Remember to check that the location you are visiting is fine for entry with a UK passport as some areas of the UAE are still not 100% safe for Brits.

Climate

The UAE by nature is a desert and arid place so from May to September; it is hot and very humid. The weather can easily top a staggering 40 degrees centigrade meaning it can be difficult to bear if you are not used to these climates. December to January is more comfortable at around 20 degrees centigrade and it can be quite windy in the very popular holiday areas, such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Generally in the summer tourist months, the sun is strong and sun protection is necessary.

What to do

If you visit Abu Dhabi, then there are plenty of lush beaches to visit – many of the hotels have private beaches that are scenic with lots of clean water to swim in. There are also plenty of gold and equestrian clubs in the area, due to the Arab love for gambling and you can visit the main racetrack during your stay.

Dubai is similar with its miles of beaches. Try out the 4x4 Desert Adventure safari in Dubai – you travel in a large vehicle and bounce all over the sand dunes; fun for adults and children. There are also plenty of sightseeing tours but car and boat as well as a private overnight safari called 1001 Arabian stars which is a rather special stop over break, sleeping in a tent overnight.
