Sharjah is one of the emirates of the United Arab Emirates and is also the name of the largest city within this emirate. The city is the third largest in UAE and like other emirates it offers a variety of things to see and do including shopping, beaches, and culture.

Flights to Sharjah

Visitors to Sharjah will arrive at the Sharjah International Airport (airport code: SHJ) which is about 9 miles (15km) outside the city. The airport is the base for the local Air Arabia airline. There are no public buses in Sharjah, but plenty of taxis and shuttle buses. Most flights to Sharjah from the UK have 2 connections except for British Midland and Egyptair that both stop once in Cairo. Lufthansa travels through Frankfurt and Cairo, and a flight to Sharjah with British Airways makes its stops in Istanbul and Cairo.

Sharjah Tourist Attractions

The emirate of Sharjah may not be as well known as Dubai outside of the UAE but it’s certainly a popular place with the locals, many of whom prefer to live here and work in Dubai. This is because the cost of living is quite a bit cheaper in Sharjah when compared to Dubai and the same could be said for visitors too. Sharjah will offer a slightly more affordable alternative when it comes to staying in this part of UAE.

In terms of tourism in Sharjah you’ll find there is a good mixture of things to see and do in both the emirate and the city. Sharjah Heritage Area is one place of interest. It’s within the city and contains of number of historic buildings and houses, some of which are open to the public for viewing. Two major landmarks within this district are the Sharjah Fort Museum and the Islamic Museum.

The Sharjah Fort Museum is focused around a historic fort that was built in 1820 and was formerly the home of the Al Qasimi ruling family. The fort has since been restored and is now a museum that displays some of the social history of the Sharjah emirate.

The Islamic Museum is an interesting visit even if your faith is not Islam. There are numerous Islamic exhibits as well as a very good display of Arabian handicrafts.

Like other emirates Sharjah offers plenty in the way of shopping, including modern shopping malls. Tourists might prefer to visit one of the city’s two souks though for a more traditional form of shopping. Here you can experience shopping the way it used to be. Souq al-Arsah is considered to be the oldest souq in the country while the Blue Souq is the more famous of the two. It contains around 600 shops and is an excellent place to buy carpets at reduced rates if you’re prepared to haggle.

When Should You Visit Sharjah?

Like the rest of the UAE visitors to Sharjah should expect to experience hot and generally dry weather throughout the year. Being on the coast Sharjah does have some rainfall during the summer but it usually comes in short, sharp bursts so shouldn’t be a major problem. During the summer temperatures can be extremely hot reaching up into the high 40’s C.
