Places in Yemen
Aden is an ancient port city sitting near the southern tip of Yemen in the Middle East. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Aden has much to offer tourists interested in history and culture.
Flights to Aden
Though there is an international airport in Aden, many tourists arrive in Yemen via the capital city, Sana'a. Smaller charter flights and buses are available between the two cities, though a bus ride will take nearly 8 hours. Once you get to Aden, Aden International Airport (airport code: ADE) is less than 6 miles (10km) outside the city centre. If you do want to catch a flight to Aden that does not go via Sana’a they are available with only a small number of airlines. Yemenia is the only airline offering a direct flight to Aden from London Heathrow, otherwise fly with British Airways via Cairo, then transfer to Yemenia, or catch a flight to a major Middle Eastern city from where you can change to Yemenia also.
Aden Tourist Attractions
Aden is an ancient city that has long been an important sea port. The natural harbour was actually formed inside the crater of an extinct volcano and has been used since the 5th century. The old town of the city is also located within parts of this crater, making this quite a unique place to visit.
Crater
Crater (also spelt Kraytar) is actually an unofficial name for the old town of Aden, which is officially (in Arabic) called Seera. The old city streets are great for wandering around as you’ll see many older buildings including mosques, the Central Market, excellent viewpoints, and a couple of museums – the Military Museum and the National Museum.
Steamer Point
As well as the Crater area of Aden, Steamer Point is famous and popular. Officially called Tawahi, this part of the city was known as Steamer Point in colonial days. It was built as the modern port by the British colonists and today is popular as a tourist port. There are some remnants of the British here such as a statue of Queen Victoria. As with other parts of the city there are some excellent viewing points from parts of Steamer Point, and this part of Aden was also home to the famous French poet, Arthur Rimbaud; you can visit the Rimbaud House.
Beach Resorts
Just outside the city proper is Aden’s other side, beautiful beaches and hotels, making this a great place to come for a beach holiday with added history and culture!
Gold Mohur Beach is particularly well known and popular and there are some very good hotels here. You can take advantage of the beautiful beaches or spend your days out in the water, snorkelling, boating, fishing or diving.
Compared to most places in Yemen, Aden actually has a fairly substantial nightlife so you can relax on the beach by day and enjoy a fun and lively atmosphere by night.
When Should You Visit Aden?
Yemen’s coastal regions are known for being very hot, including Aden. The climate here is far drier than on the west coast so there’s little in the way of rainfall. The average temperature in June is 32C (90F) though actual high temperatures can get close to 40C (100F+) during the summer. In the winter temperatures remain warm and pleasant with averages of 25C (77F).
